Hi guys,

I recently picked up a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones (80 ohm) and a FiiO E17 amp.

My first impressions are that they're absolutely fantastic. I usually use Sennheiser in-ear jobbies so i don't really have anything to compare them to, but i really am chuffed to bits with them!

Anyway, I mainly listen to house music and with the E17 gain set to 12db, when i have it fairly loud, it tends to start crackling when there is a low bass note (perhaps 45/60 volume on certain tracks).

I've looked online and some people say the headphones are faulty, the amp is too powerful etc.

I'm not at all clued up on this but just wanted to see what peoples thoughts were?

Am i expecting too much of the headphones or am i using them incorrectly?

I rarely listen to music 'that' loud, and 95% of the time they're faultless, but if it is a headphone issue i want to get them sorted as they're under warranty.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know about the amp being "too powerful", as the E17 is a portable amp, but 12db gain is a bit high considering the DT770 is only 80ohm.  Do you still get the distortation if you turn the gain down to 0 and the volume up to 60?  Do you have access to any other amps?  Usually, you want to keep your gain as low as you can to minimize distortion.  Higher gains is meant for higher impedance headphones, such as 300-600 ohm Sennheisers and Beyerdynamics.

I use my Fiio E17 with 32 ohm Beyerdynamic T5p at 12 db gain. There's no more audible distortion than at 6 or 0 db gain, and the cans sound better. More full and defined.
