Howdy all!
Used these forums for a long time, but not really a bit forum poster, hoping to get some advice as per below.
My current setup is:
Beyerdynamic DT 250 80ohm
Amp (Cannot remember specifics)
I have been running this setup for 6 or 7 years now, and while I love the Beyer’s I am starting to feel like change!
I do not claim to be an expert as I have been lucky to have a great setup that has worked for many years now without complaint, but time has come for a change.
My requirements:
- Will always be run from computer through amp, so portability not an issue
- Closed or semi closed – I live in a loft house and wife was not thrilled with leakage with the pair of AKG K7XX I own, even though I was upstairs in study and she was in lounge right below me. I think mild leakage would be acceptable as it is a big place.
- Over ear preferred instead of on ear
- Music types – Punk and rock mainly, dabble in most genre’s
- Comfortable as I use when playing games too plus I wear glasses
- Hoping to spend max $400ish US (a little bit of flexibility)
In Australia and in Perth particularly it can be hard to find a place to listen to headphones before buying, however in Japan recently I had the chance to visit E-Headphones and listen to ‘most’ of the headphones I was interested in.
Here are my brief thoughts about what I looked at for ideas (I listened to about 60 pairs of headphones, so just a couple of points):
Shure 1540 – Comfort level great, was general unimpressed with the sound
Beyerdynamics in general – In my budget there was no standouts, again great comfort but not much else
Yamaha MT220 – I actually enjoyed these, but almost felt like I was making a sideways move instead of
Oppo PM3 – Thought these sounded nice and a bit safe, but didn’t think they were super comfortable
Audeze Sine – I actually enjoyed how these sounded out of all the headphones, but they were the most uncomfortable I tried
These are ones I could not find to try out, but was looking!
Hifiman HE 400/i/s – Cannot find anywhere to try out, seem a solid choice but think being open might be an issue
Fostex T50RP – Cannot find to try out, seem like a cheaper option then the Hifiman but possibly not as good
My thoughts:
I am leaning towards the planar magnetic options, as I enjoyed both the Oppo and the Audeze.
Any recommendations or guidance would be great! I almost made the jump and just bought the Hifiman but have concerns about being leakage – hopefully there are some good alternative options I may have just missed!
