Hello people,

I am in the process of buying my first headphones, and at the moment the BEYERDYNAMIC DT 660 or AKG K 550 might be a good choice. The purpose of these headphones will be to listen to Blu-ray dvd, HD music files (mostly alternative rock), and playing games offline.

So my question is: which of the above do recommend/or are there any other headphones I should be looking at?

Please note that my budget is $300 and below for headphones.

There are many headphones below 300 dollars, what are your concerns? Any type of signature you like more? Do you want closed back or open?

K550 would be the better choice over DT660, but I think that you should consider other options as well.  There might be even better ones than K550.

For 300 dollars you can get brand new DT880, K702, HD650, AD900X, Fidelio L1, HE-400, etc. I think you could consider any of these plus many more... depending on your taste.

He seems to want closed-back, though.  Unless he corrects me.

My top priorities in regards to buying headphones would be having a good soundstage, having noise canceling headphones and having headphones which are comfortable. The only other thing that I'm worried about is the durability of the headphones.

Nope.

Do you want closed back or open?
Closed

It should be noted that I've done some more research and the Bower & Wilkins P5 are looking good (still have to listen to them in a store), however with that in mind maybe it will give people an idea to what headphones I'm looking for.

Is there a reason why you want closed? Is there anyone around when you use the headphones? Cause most people will tell you that you are going to compromise on sound quality if you get closed headphones as you can get better open ones for the same price. I personally like the K550 as they are very light on the head but many people with smaller heads complain the seal is not good, a problem you wouldn't have with open headphones.

For $300 brand new: DT880, K702 (Non Anniversary Edition), AD900X, and Fidelio L1, sure. But I doubt you will be able to find HD650 and HE-400 for $300 brand new... not right now at least.

Also from your S500 thread:

Haven't heard the HD800 but I find the S500 to be a little brother to the Audio Technica AD900. Of course the AD900 is better overall but the S500 is more balanced with smaller soundstage. For 56 dollars, it's probably better than a lot of 500 dollar cans.

What $500 dollar headphones are you comparing them to?

This is a tricky question for me to answer, I guess the real reason for me liking closed headphones over open headphones is for situations that might not happen (just in case). What is meant by this, is having the ability to use them in quiet places such as my university library or media center. However, I can not say that these places will be used a lot by me (they haven't been in the past).

So I tired most the headphones that were on m list today and found the SRH940 to be the best headphones. However, one of the headphones I still have to try are the sennheiser momentum do you think these will offer the same sound (neutral)?

I havent tried the Shure but I own the Momentums... they are very nice and they are portable. To me they sound better than any AKG headphone. Plus they are my most comfortable headphone after the AKG K550. Can't really go wrong with them I believe. Though, they are a bit fancy and they are the kind of headphones you don't want to throw too much around. You can get them for less than 300 dollars in some places....

How are the Momentums with watching movies, in particular do they offer any surround sound or do the speakers tend to output in the same place?

I have never watched movies with closed headphones, but will try and tell you what I think. The only reason I have to swet in headphones is when I'm in public places since people don't deserve to listen to my noises :P
