Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO - Beyer's open-back mastering headphone

Since I have the DT1770s which would you recommend the Amirons or the DT1990s. Would the DT1990s be too close to the DT1770s, so should I go with the Amirons?

The DT 1990 is going to be a bit like an open-back and more even/neutral sounding DT 1770, it carries a similar character to the sound. The Amiron is more mellow and laid-back and ideal for long term listening, think a warm non-fatiguing somewhat u-shaped sound with the Amiron. The DT 1990 will pretty much compete and likely replace the DT 1770, the Amiron Home will be better suited as a complementary headphone to the DT 1770 imho.

I would say Amiron if you want a bass-light, more laid back presentation as a complete opposite of the 1770. But if you want more or less a similar sound signature to the 1770, but more open and refined - I would go 1990.

Thank you! I’m having a hard time making up my mind and unfortunately don’t have enough money to try all 3 to see which I like better. I do like the DT1770s, so I may try the Amirons if the DT1990s aren’t a hugh improvement over the DT1770s.

I just traded for a set of Shure SRH1540s, so I wonder how they compare to the Amirons besides being closed back opposed to being open back!

Odd you find the Amiron bass-light as I found it to have more bass than the DT 1990, a somewhat softer bass but more bass overall.

Yeah - in direct comparison I thought the Amirons were somewhat lacking in the low end department.

Ah I directly compared them for a long time, the Amirons always had more bass on my system, the DT 1990 did have more slam and impact though and on some systems did have more bass presence, measurements do show the Amiron having more though.

So weird! If you check out metal571’s review of the Amiron, he also mentioned the lack of low end. I wonder what’s going on - maybe there was a production change since I had one of the first runs.

Not sure what’s going on there. My Amiron serial is 01891, definitely an early one. I’ve had mine since January. His review doesn’t correlate with my experience at all, I agree with him on the DT 1990 but the Amiron Home review baffled me as my experience is nothing like that with it. Mine isn’t bright at all, it does have a 7-8khz peak which shows itself st times but is never too much. It has the cleanest and most refined treble I’ve heard on any Beyer, not even a hint of harshness or sibilance. Could be product variance, I could of simply gotten a good one.

What is the output impedance of your amp? I'm not sure whether the new tesla cans have the same oddity, but the 1st gen teslas all have massive impedance spikes in the bass ( > 600 ohm) so the amp's output impedance makes a huge difference in the bass quantity.

Not sure on the Sony UDA-1, I got it mainly for the DAC and speaker amp, it just turned out to be a good pairing for the Tesla Beyers. I have tried the Amirons and DT 1990 on many low output and high output impedance amps and I feel the same about the headphones. It generally gets a bit warmer on higher output impedance amps, but I found that the case on essentially every headphone I tried.
