Beyerdynamic DT-1770: Product Info, Discussion and Impressions

Alright. Can you tell more about why it wouldn't be a upgrade from the 770?
1. It is almost impossible to pull leatherette ear pads on the headphones that come with them in the kit.
2. Too much slow bass. I got a headache from that bass.
3. Sharp and unpleasant highs with a metallic color.
4. The midrange is closer than 770, but it's very boring, dead.
5. These headphones don't have to cost that much. I wouldn't pay more than $300 for them.

Thanks for explanations. With sharp and unpleasant highs you mean it has sibilance?

By the way, my 770 32 do not have such a nasty highs as 1770.
Such a shame the 1770 is not really a good upgrade from the 770. I have the 770 250 and love it. I'll get the 770 80 soon to use it for portable devices and has very good noise isolation. But nasty highs as the 880... My ears are sensitive for that.

Neither do the 770 80 ohm.

I do disagree with the bass being slow...these have epic bass that, to my ear, was very fast if not a bit overdone. Again, a little eq and it does help.

I dont think the bass is slow, nor do I think these have "epic" bass. They have mid-bass but not low bass.
The treble peak ~8k is definitely troubling. I returned mine and back to using the TH900 mk2. Speaking of bass...

Had no idea it is that severe. Although some people can handle the sibilance but for me, I'll pass on this one. Amirons are the finest I've ever have. (reading your sig)

I hope the 177X comes back in stock. They fixed a lot of the tuning issues of the original and to me it sounds nothing like what’s been described about the 1770. Treble isn’t sharp at all, except tizzy and rough on poorly mastered stuff. There’s a bit of a metallic texture still but not too bad, again dependent on recording. Mids are well balanced, not a fun embrace like the HD6XX but natural sounding. Not a lot of subbass presence, bass isn’t super speedy but not too slow either. Very acceptable and it’s a fun bass without crossing any barriers. I like them, more than I probably would’ve liked the 1770. They’re very listenable which to me is most important.

Speaking of the Amiron’s, I think they tried to tune the 177X closer to the Amiron as opposed to the 1770.

I'm not entirely sure it is fair to compare the 1770's to headphones costing 3 times the price! Just out of interest, what would you recommend in the 200 - 500 bracket price range? Looking at 1770's seriously but if any of you guys can suggest a better alternative, I'm all ears. Needs to be detailed, great across a reasonably wide spectrum of music, and lean on the warm side. I like bass when I'm in the mood!

I'm interested in the recommendations too as I'm looking for a bass heavy closed can under $500 that has good clarity and EQs well.

Pretty much my demographic as well. Looked at Shure 1540's, but not sold on mmcx for an over-ear. Also, ive heard as many mixed reviews for them as i have the 1770's. Other possibles are the Audio-Technica ATH-SR9, but can't find any reviews, the Denon AHD5200EM, but heard bad things about the fit. Had the Sennheiser HD 660 S on my radar for a while, but don't really want open back for noise reasons. Feel free to chip-in anyone.

Pro: a "better" tuned DT 1770; treble taken down a notch and transition mid - bass - sub bass is smoother.
Con: it's delivered without the DT 1770 case.
The DT 1770 Pro is going for $392 on Amazon, while the DT 177X GO is at $470. You do get the sheepskin earpads, but you can buy those separately if you want for a bit cheaper. Lack of case hurts a bit, unless you already have one you can use. Also, the main draw for GO is that it's really easy to drive and, well, can be used on the "go" (pun absolutely intended) with almost any phone.

After being a little disappointed with the Custom One Pro Plus, I decided to take it up a notch (or two) to the 1770.
