As an owner of custom DT880 600 ohm headphones, I just recieved this email from Beyer:

Dear Mr. [spent a lot of money on custom 600 ohm cans],

Some time ago you bought through the world’s first online configuration site for headphones, beyerdynamic MANUFAKTUR, your DT 880 a top premium headphone which, we hope, is in regular use.

As we consider you to be a discerning music lover, we are today approaching you with a very special offer.

We would very much like to show you how you could greatly improve your headphone’s stereo unit reproduction, and in this context make you aware of a sensational new product from our company.

Probably the greatest weakness in the audio chain with headphones is the compromise in technical sound when using the built-in headphone amplifier in hi-fi units.

No one would ever doubt that the operation of loudspeakers requires the use of an appropriate gain with a power amplifier. For headphones on the other hand mostly there is a built-in operational amplifier in the play-back unit which has a detrimental effect on the sound quality, causing clear artefacts in the reproduction.

Phase displacements, noise from the circuit and distortions occur – in terms of sound quality this imprecise reproduction is expressed in lower depth with the acoustic production of recordings, reduced localisation of individual instruments or voices, and permanent (even if quiet) hissing.

The beyerdynamic A 1 headphone is now putting an end to this. With its generously oversized power supply with a toroidal transformer and the discretely built-on circuit design this reference amplifier provides headphones of 32 to 600 ohms impedance the very best in precise audio performance. Regarding beat, phase linearity and completely uncoloured reproduction of audio signals across an amazingly wide frequency range stretching way beyond human perception, the beyerdynamic A 1 is a true masterpiece. The background noise? Not even noticed at full output.

What this precisely means for the audio experience is that depth and instrument localisation are noticeably improved, and the dynamics are exactly the same as the original – figuratively speaking with the A 1 it is like lifting a veil to reveal a new acoustic reality.

What the beyerdynamic A 1 also handles unlike most other concepts is:

By the way, the A 1’s special circuit was originally designed in the beyerdynamic research department for modulating our best transducers – the series of premium line headphones which your MANUFAKTUR headphones come from. At the request of some of our long-term fans we have decided to use our designer’s know-how to make this product available to all lovers of music.

The beyerdynamic A1 headphone amplifier has already been officially available on the market for a few months as one of the best units in its class in the world. The High End in Munich in the middle of this year was the launchpad for this extraordinary audio power house, which at last makes headphones as precise as the music stored on your media.

The feedback from the press about the presentation of the A1 was prompt and was simply fantastic. We are pleased with the numerous tributes from well-known specialist magazines and technology sections of the mainstream press, of which we have selected one representative piece for you and attached to this email for you to read

As we are sure that you too could enjoy your favourite music even more intensively with the help of the beyerdynamic A 1, we are offering you this headphone amplifier exclusively for a limited period at a one-off special discount of 10% on the original price.

This means that only you as a customer of beyerdynamic MANUFAKTUR can buy the A1 for € 890.00 in the new beyerdynamic online shop beyerdynamic Shop*-*Home. To do this simply click on the following picture:

and enter this code whilst ordering: [xxxx]

A credit of € 100.00 will then be automatically deducted for you from the original purchase price (€ 990.00).

If you have any questions about the A1, beyerdynamic headphone technology or any other electroacoustic issues, we look forward to your reply and will be pleased to be of assistance.

Best wishes from Heilbronn

Now they're getting somewhere. I always thought it was a little overpriced, but €100 definitely helps.

This is a bloody good amplifier, that really lives up to the Dynamic part of its name. :)

Same offer here as ex owner or Manufaktur DT990. Still bit pricey considering strong euro. And, would anyone swap Opera (+cash) for A1?

Someone did a review of the A1 on here about nine months ago. I can't find it now. As I recall he compared it with a well reputed amp and preferred the A1. It is expensive but I suspect it might compete in sound quality with similarly priced amps.

I got that email too. Unfortunately, with the current exchange rate, this amp is just too expensive in the USA for me to buy one just to check it out.
