Hi everyone!

I'm new in the head-fi world, so i seek some expert advice. After some research, i have come to face the end of my journey into choosing a quality pair of cans.
I'm have to choose between Beyer dynamics DT990 and AKG K701. I tried out the DT990 PRO against Sennheiser HD650 earlier today, and i picked the beyer over the sennheiser.
The DT990 should be even better than the pro, but how is it compared to the AKG K701, and do you have other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

mid-day is pretty slow on this forum.

I own several beyers and several AKGs but my DT990 hails from the 1990's and may sound different from a current DT990. I've never been within 100 feet of a K701 - which i understand is a major departure from AKG's house sound signature.

So, here's my advice:

Try to listen to a K701 that has been in use for some time. Everyone says this headphone changes a lot after the first few hundred hours. If you can find a local head-fier with a pair, that would be perfect.

Don't discount the K601 just because it's a lower number. You may like it better.

Same goes for the DT880, which some years has been more favored than the DT990. They are very similar designs with the major differences being in the amount of venting in the earcup and the type of damping.

See what happens when you ask for advice here? Your problem gets more complex!

The K701 should be very different from the DT990... it should be more like the DT880 which is my main headphone.
In any case, it comes down to personal preference. If you know you like the DT990, get yourself a pair! But if you could try some AKGs, I definitely think you should do so before you buy anything.

The K501 and many older models from AKG are also nice by the way.

Hey Folde. Interesting that you prefer the 990s to 650s. I think a lot of it has to do with which headphone you tried on first. If you tried the 990s on first the 650s may have been a shock to you because of the major difference in the highs............I definitely would get the K701s over the 990s. I would even get the 880s over the 990s. BUT I think before you buy anything you should try the HD600s as I think for all intents and purposes they are the most outstanding headphone available and easily the most neutral and natural sounding. They have bit less bass than the 650s, and bit more highs. It may be what you're looking for.

The K701 is a fairly neutral headphone that is excellent at faithfully reproducing the 1's and 0's. The DT990 on the other hand is a flavored headphone that IMO is a more fun listen. So it's all about what you want the headphone to do. If you listen to a lot of rock, and like a fun engaging SQ I'd say go for the DT990. If you listen to a lot of classical and want a truer representation of the recorded media I'd suggest the K701. This is not to suggest that each headphone is only good for the genres I've mentioned though.

Folde, what's your favorite sound? And, what makes you prefer DT990 compared with HD650? I think we will able to give you a more accurate suggestion when you answer these.

I'd suggest that if you like the DT990pro better than the HD650, then you might just want to stop with it, and instead of throwing additional cash after a "better" headphone, use it to get the obligatory amp.
