Have pair of these for almost 20 years now and they need new pads. What is the best place to get these? Can they be easily made?

Also, are there any mods for these phones?

TIA for any feedback!!

If the pads have merely gone flat, i can give you a short tutorial on re-foaming them. Some people just pull out the foam and stuff 'em full of polyfill, but i put new foam in mine.

IMHO the best place to get them is to call Michael at Beyer USA. I'm not sure of any other reliable vendor. The new ones are silver and have a silky texture. They stand straight up instead of leaning in toward the driver, gives more room for your ear.

Edit: That number is 1-800-293-4463 - if you select service you'll get Michael or his assistant. Good people. Right now, Beyer USA mops the floor with AKG USA in terms of customer service.

As for mods, some people who are very sensitive to high frequencies have experimented with passive equalization circuits installed right in the earcup, but new pads generally even out the frequency response - which is changed dramatically when the driver is the correct distance from your ear. There is one head-fi member who appears to be working on a mechanical mod to correct what he perceives as a slight sibilance in his dt-990, so, watch this forum over the next few days.

I dunno about that, when I called Michael last week he mostly just mumbled to himself where I couldn't really understand, then asked for my email to send me an order form. I got it, complete with the part number for something completely different than what I needed. I asked in a reply to the email for the correct part number and price, and several days later he emailed me the service doc (meaning: "find the part number yourself"), still with no price. I haven't sent the order form in yet, because I'm a bit skeptical about their instructions for me to just give them my credit card number via email, and without a clue what the part will actually cost.

Well, my latest with AKG is, they said they'd send me the foam rings, foam discs, some small screws (all the small screws on my k240 are rusty), and the other badge.

And that they'd refund the $22 they overcharged me for the lid. Which is back-orderd until the 6th of june.

I got four small screws, the other badge, and a bill for $2.22.
