1> Can this 80ohm version be driven out of a regular laptop soundcard if I dont want to use an external sound card or amp?

2> How is the bass, imaging and sound quality compared to a900 and hfi700/650dvd?

thanks

1) Don't know, I auditioned them at Guitar Center, from my Archos, which has an awesome headphone jack, which can even power 600ohm cans.

2) Compared to the HFI650DVD, bass is "bigger" and dominates the mids more, and has the feeling of more air behind the bass hits, hence more power. It is not as strong in the very lowest octave, almost sub sonic stuff as the Ultrasone though. The soundstage of the DT770 is much wider, one of the best from closed cans, and more convincing, but the ultrasone places images a tad more precisely. The DT770 also has better and more realistic mids, and the 80ohm version lets them come out from behind the bass much better than the 250ohm version. The highs of the DT770 are a bit more harsh than the Ultrasone (which is no king of smooth highs), but they're more extended as well. Overal, for sound quality I like the DT770-80 as the best special-interest big-bass cans (save perhaps the Grado PS1) but I keep the Ultrasones because they're my closed portables.

I auditioned a pair of Beyer dt770's (80ohm) at Guitar Center. They were being powered straight out of a cd player headphone jack, and sounded perfectly acceptable. Keep in mind driving them with a dedicated headphone amp will be better, but without an amp should work well too.

Hi, I also have a question regarding DT770 PRO - 80 vs. DT770: as I've read in one review, the DT770 are bigger and more confy than the PRO version, but is this only due to the bigger headband or are the earcups also related with this confort? (I'm really interested in that point, because I have a really big ears and they need great space

).

I'd also like to know if they will keep right on their place if I use them lying in the bed reading a book.

The only way I'm able to get them is ordering them, so I cannot try them first and any help with my decision will be really helpfull.

Thanks,
Chompy

Finally a post I feel I can contribute to!! I have the DT770 (adjustable headband version), and I have big ears that stick out. I find them great for me. They fit over my ears fine, and I don't even feel them touching my ears after about 10 mins (almost feels numb). I'd highly recommend them!!

Only the headband is more adjustable and does not clamp on your head as hard. Also the earcups on these cans are so big, you'd really have to be a human dumbo for your ears not to fit inside them.

Its pretty comfy wearing the 770s in bed, but I wouldn't really want to lie on my side with them, as it puts a lot of stress on the ear pad and the cup. I wouldn't want to break anything, hehe

For me, the 770s are very comfy all around.
