If I listen to the D5000 and get used to the sound signature then go to the DT880 these are the perceived changes.

1. Quite a bit less bass, but still enough to be satisfying. I could live with the DT880 bass and be happy.
2. A more recessed sounding midrange which is *slightly* less clear. This isn't easily apparent with classical or instrumental music, but it is noticeable with vocals. I sometimes add a ~5db EQ bump at 3khz to address this.
3. A very "3D" like soundstage. The DT880 sounds spacious without sounding fake or just wide in a left/right sense.
4. A brighter treble region. This is great with classical as it gives brass instruments a slightly electrostatic like sheen. I found the treble area can sometimes be fatiguing with modern pop music. With older recordings that are recorded well this is less of an issue.

In terms of comfort the D5000 wins, but the DT880 is really comfortable as well.

The Denons get more head time as I feel the tamer higher end makes them more forgiving and they work well for just about any genre. The DT880 does a great job with classical and soundtracks as the sound and soundstage seem well suited for that.

Some people complain that the DT880 can be a little sterile sounding. I so find myself slanting towards that with modern pop music.

Both are great headphones.

Don't take the graphs too seriously as many are fairly off from what people hear.

Hope all that helps.

Thank you, that is VERY helpful. I'm thinking that the low impedance Denon's would work well with the Shanling PH0100, a $250 SS unit, but if I went with the Beyers I should probably get a tube unit which would be at least double that price. So thinking in terms of an 'amp/phone system at least I know what would work with the Denons....

It depends on what kind of music you like. DT880 has better treble extension, flexible, very good soundstage, natural. The bass of D5000 is colorized, more dynamic than the DT880, but the treble extension is a little bit fall behind than the DT880. If you like pop, D5000 is better; but if you like classical music, then DT880 is much suitable.

The Shanling PH100, with its FET output stage, is a surprisingly warm-sounding solid-state amp. Don't assume...

So are you saying the PH100 might not work that well with D5000's, or it might actually work well with Beyers?

Of course that gets us into the whole, 'what impedance Beyers do you get'!

Not sure. Sonically it is on the warm side, while drive-wise the circuit seems better for low impedance cans. Gotta listen to them together to say for sure.

I don't know why you'd need a Tube amp for the DT880. Long before the Tube amp craze on Head-Fi people were raving about the DT880. The DT880 sounds just fine with an SS amp.

Are we talking about the 250ohm or the 600ohm DT880, people say there is a difference in sound between the two (most seem to prefer the 600ohm if properly amped).

I'll quote this as the DT880/600, the DT880 '03 and DT880 '05 250 ohm all sound different in sound quality. Please edit your impressions to state what version it is people!

DT880 600 ohm > DT880 '03 > DT880 '05 250 ohm.

That said, I'd definitely like some DT880/600 vs. Denon D5000/ Markl Modded D2000 impressions.

I'm pretty sure you could buy a jade tube amp for ~300 and it would perform amazingly with a DT880/600. As long as you get a decently built SS/Tube amp, the DT880 will be fine. Just ask skylab. I'm sure he'll have a recommendation about amps for the DT880.

DT880 600 ohm > DT880 '03 > DT880 '05 250 ohm.

...

Hi Chinesekiwi, Could you elaborate on how in particular the 600 Ohm model sounds better than the 250 Ohm version currently available? Thanks

What if you listen mostly to metal, hardrock, prog, alernative, electronic (downtemp, ambient), post rock.... Im thinking the d5000s will be to slow for metal.. and the bass will muddy the sound but would be really good fer electronic...
