I recently bought a pair of the AT's and as I burn them in I can tell they're not really doing it for me.

Can anyone tell me if the Beyer DT770 Pro 80, which seem to garner a lot of praise here, is a significantly better sound than the ATH-M50?

Or would I have to go up to, let's say, the Denon 2000 to get a significantly better sound?

Thanks in advance,

Please help us answer by giving some information.

1. What genre's of music do you listen to?
2. What other components do you use?
3. What headphone qualities are you looking for?

This information is really helpful when looking for opinions\advice

I doubt Beyers are much better. ATH-M50s are awesome cans, but really need to loosen up to sound their best. Give ATH-M50s at least 100 hours of burn-in, then report back.

So today I picked up a pair of the DT770 Pro 80.

And I've listened to them carefully (though of course brand new; without any burn-in time at all.)

IMO:

They're really good headphones, but they are not significantly better
than the ATH-M50's.

In fact, in many ways the AT's outperform the Beyers.

While the highs and mids are excellent on the Beyers, they've got this big whompy bass that I just knew immediately I was not going to be able to deal with for very long.

I listened to them plugged into a Grado extension cable which was plugged into the headphone output of my Rotel preamp.
CD player is a Denon DCM390.
Blue Jean Cable analog interconnects.

See I told you ATH-M50s are about the best you can get for the price and wait till they burn-in completely.

If you want something significantly better, try Ultrasone Proline 750s. They can be found for around $250 on ebay sometimes. They have a more refined and detailed sound and perhaps somewhat better soundstaging than ATH-M50s while maintaining the neutrality.

Yes, Pianist, you did hit it right on the head.

(And thanks as well to the others as well who recommended burn-in.)

Today, after even further burn-in, I'm really very pleased with the M50's.
Especially as I got them for $99USD shipped, I also think they're a terrific value.

I appreciate the Ultrasone recommendation...but first I'm very interested in trying a set of AKG272HD to add to my headphone collection.
I realize it might be a step sideways - rather than upward - to the AKG, but reading some reviews about them has really piqued my interest.

I guess I should start a thread on Beyer DT770 Pro 80 vs. AKG 272HD.

Thanks again to all.

whered you get em for 99 bucks? and i had to fork over 150(130+10shipping+10 tax...I should've bought out of state...didnt think about tax at the time)

anyway, back on topic. I couldn't tell a lot of change with burn in, my ears were still getting used to better quality, so i didn't dare look for shortcomings. however...I did notice after about 60hrs of burn in I got some nice tight bass. Maybe burn in has helped, but I really think my ears have just gotten used to them.

Don't worry, I felt just like you when I first got them.

Just some friendly advice, why buy more headphones now? You just bought 2 good sets? slow down, relax a bit and enjoy the ones you have. If anything get some different types...open back or something. Don't get me wrong, you could have perfectly good reasons for buying more, in fact I now very little of your situation.

Anyway, consider that...buy 100 bucks worth of music or something

glad you like them...another satisfied m50 owner...these are way too unpopular...

I owned both. They are each others opposites.
-DT770 Pro: big hard hitting bass, mids not so detailed and forward, slightly recessed and sibilant highs, a lot of PRat
-K272/271: lean and tight bass, detailed and upfront mids, smooth and non sibilant highs, lifeless soundsig.

As others said, relax, and enjoy the cans you have now instead of looking for more.

++ That's the reason why I would avoid AKG K271/272, unless you are going to use them solely for studio monitoring purposes and/or you got a really good high-end source/amp to plug them into. They really need good amplification badly.

x3. If you like the ATH-M50, you probably won't like the K272/K271.
