It seems the Neutrik line of 1/4" jacks are quite popular, but is there anything better out there? Something even more robust and heavier duty? I haven't been able to find anything. It's as if 1/4" just isn't a popular format. I'd use RCA, as it's much more popular and the selection is much wider, but I'd rather stick to having just one plug.

rean nys215, as seen on a large slice or pro audio gear.

or some of the switchcraft jacks, also used on heaps of gear that gets put through the ringer.

whats wrong with whats available? i destroy gear, and even the cheapest 1/4" jack has never given me a hint of any problems.

Plugs or jacks? Jacks being female, plugs being male...It would be hard to ruin any decent jack unless you're jamming the plug in real hard at different angles. For plugs, I like Canare's plugs...I like the look and they're built like tanks. I also like all of Calrad's connectors, from the Canare look-a-likes to the real slim bland nickel stereo mini jacks. I don't go nuts like some other folks on the barrel quality...as long as it's making contact, it works. The jacks are nothing but spring contacts anyway, they don't make contact all around the barrel.

There's plenty of different plugs available (I don't really like Cardas, but their plugs do look nice and the rhodium plating isn't a bad idea), but very few jacks, which is why I was wondering if there was something better than a Neutrik, which seems to be pretty common for DIY projects.

And as a totally unrelated question, what exactly is the point of XLR connectors?

3 pins for balanced connections.

EDIT: or in the akg 241's case - single-cable entry for right/left/ground and the mini-XLR connector ostensibly provides better contact and durability than plain connector pins alone.
