the solution would be to essentially have 2 face places ... an outer face plate and an inner face place...... the pot would mount on the inner face place with whole the diameter of the mounter structure..... the outer face plate would have a hole the diameter of the volume knob +1mm or so...... this way the knob can stick out as far as you want (just move the inner plate back farther) and you eliminate the gap behind the volume knob and the external face plate

several inner face plates can be used at varying depths for each component on the face...... e.g. the jack can have a face plate just a few mms behind the outerplate.... by attaching the jack to this plate you no longer have an unsightly moiunting nut on the outside of the case......

the inner face plates can be made by simply making a right angle bend in a piece of sheet metal
Code:

Code:
[left] | | [ ] | [ ]==|Pot [ ] | | | | |_______ _____^___^____ | = sheet metal _ = sheet metal ^ = screw [] = volume knob = = pot shaft[/left]

in fact i think this would look better regardless of wether or not a pot shaft would need trimming:
