Best value IEMs?
May 28, 2009 at 11:20 AM Post #2 of 16
Well, it's not a "pretty simple" at all, since people require different things from their IEMs. Some people look for the most comfortable design, some people look for the heaviest bass, some people look for the most durable IEM, others only care about the highs and clear detail, some are most concerned with how they sound amped.

If you are looking for "bang for the buck", what do you listen to? Opera, rock, audiobooks, rap, trance?

Have you seen these similar topics?

Pretty simple question, really. In your opinion, which IEMs give the most bang for the buck?

Phonak PFE ... at around ~150$ they can compete with 1000$ ones

PFEs are not bang for the buck, your lucky if they dont fall to bits at the moment.

PK3 are great, Sony Ex75/76 are good value (seen them retailing at £15 - £20) , CX300s are ok (if you get real ones!)

they did broken but with super fast response. It is still one of the best value. It won't be long until they sort the issue up. They will put the effort in solving the issue because no manufacturer want to ship out 3~4 pair of earphone for the price of 1

Dont assume they can fix the issue easily, may actually need a redesign.
I dont doubt they sound great , i just cant be bothered having to return stuff.

Nearly impossible to answer the question as everybody has different requirements.

I've bought and sold many Shure, Etymotic, Altec Lansing, Sleek Audio, Westone models amongst others and have had for a few months now the Audio Technica ATH CKM70 and I've been very happy with them! Bang for buck earphones.

Not the best isolation, but I improved them with triple flanges. Respond well to different amplifiers (I like them with my Go Vibe Petite). Great soundstage for an 'in-ear' phone. Maybe a little bright for bass monsters or those requiring lots of warmth, but if it's in the recording, it's produced, and at a better level than Etymotic (bass response). They don't have the timbre of the Sleek Audio. Good detail though, although not up to the standards of Ety's ER4S or P.

Build quality is probably the best I've come across, and considering I use them everyday and throw them in and out of my bag, drop them etc... they look and feel brand new. Yep, build quality is very good. Oh and to add, the comfort once I change the flanges, is excellent. I don't know I'm wearing them. I'd still say the Westone UM2 beats them there, but for a hundred bucks the ATs have impressed me, and that expensive phones aren't always the best for your needs.

Not the best for everybody, but certainly a contender for 'bang for buck'.

Tough. Since I could'nt try any of the popular brands out, I went with a company I knew and enjoyed. Klipsch. I am very happy with my purchase and I think they were a killer BANG for my buck.

PFEs are the best bang for your buck.. Ety ER4s might follow them.

After all the phones I've tried, I also find the PFE to be the best value. When paired with a cheap Fiio E5 amp, these things really come alive and leave me with little to desire.

If you can get them for $35 on ebay, which you can, the Apple In-Ear Dual Drivers are a great bang for the buck phone, as are the aforementioned PK3s, and the PFEs, which are $135 but compete with higher end phones, IMHO.

Also, I recently ran into a new pair of phones (actually an update) called the VSonic R02 Pro II, which are $69 at head-direct.com and sound almost on par with the Monster Turbines, another great bang for the buck phone if you can score it for $105 at MacMall. If you can use an amp, the Head-Direct RE2s are also an excellent value at $39, but they NEED an amp.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my original post. What I meant is which IEMs are the best value to you. Not taking anyone else's preferences into consideration, and not trying to make any recommendations for anyone. Just your personal opinion. So no set price range, no particular features in mind.
