Hi i currently have ATH-CK7 (£60) earbuds and i LOVE the sound that comes out of them, i love the level of bass. And i don't see how any headphones can sound better than these little buds, which is why i'm going to find out

So i was looking at the ATH-W5000 headphones, this may sound stupid considering the price increase, but will they honestly sound that much better than my earbuds ? will the bass be as good (because i think the bass is superb on the CK7's)

Also what other headphones are good, preferably Audio Technica as i love there sound and don't dare (or really want to) try any other brands.

They will be running through a £2000 Rotel Power Amp/Pre Amp setup used to power some hi-fi stereo speakers, will this be sufficient at supplying a good sound to some new headphones ?

Just any advice, thoughts on everything i mentioned above would be great. By the way i know alot about hi-fi speakers and amplfiers, but my knowledge of heapdhones is much inferior.

Thanks.

It all depends on what your music preferences are, but I would look into getting a dedicated headphone amp. Your regular home amp/pre-amp will have far too much power and will not give clean sound that headphone gives you. I would look into getting a balanced rig for that sort of budget.

How about if i plugged into my Marantz CD player, which is supposed to have 'dedicated headphone circuitary' ??

I have not had experience with Marantz CD player but headphone amp improves the sound greatly, as built-in headphone amp on CD players are generally inferior to dedicated headphone amps.

Which Marantz do you have? I didn't see one listed in your profile. I have the SA8001 and its headphone section is pretty good. Not quite at the level of the better dedicated headphone amps, but Marantz intentionally put a decent one in their players. The model numbers are different on your side of the pond, but over here, the SA5001 has the same circuit. I think it might be a 7001 over there.

Audio Technica headphones are fairly efficient. I'd strongly recommend trying them out with your Marantz before buying a dedicated headphone amp.

I remember trying porta pro with 7001 and this combo sounded superb for a price - not quite sure how would that work with some better phones

I'm surprised no one suggested K1000. They're around about 500 quid and sound pretty darn good.

I don't think you should limit yourself to Audio Technica only. Cause there are LOTS of other great headphone vendors out there, which might be worth checking out..
