I'm looking to get into electrostats and thought that Stax would be a good place to start. I've heard so many different things about different stax setups and was wondering what the best setup (headphone+amp) would be for around $1000.

You could get a nice Lambda model and a T1 or SRM-1 mk2 amp for that price.  If you're lucky you could maybe find a Sigma and one of those amps for under $1k as a combo.  If you want to buy new, the 2050 combo is pretty popular for cheap.

i got the lambda pro + srm-1/mk-2 combo used for less than 500usd, and it sounds better than any dynamic headphone + amp combo i have in my possession (sennheiser hd650, beyerdynamic dt880 600 ohms, beyerdynamic dt990 600 ohms + audio-gd c-2c, little dot mk2). can't get them off my head actually. now, you have 1000usd to spend. imagine what you can get for that amount of cash :)

how about the sr-404 headphones and a t1 amp? :)

i'm looking at buying sigmas but not sure how they would fare over something newer like airbow sc1. heard about airbow today and they seemed pretty amazing, even though they're pretty much 404s, with altered drivers possibly? i know they claim it's just the cryogenic stuff

I havent heard the SC1s, but I dont think you can go wrong with a pair of Sigmas if you can find them at the right price. There are also some lambda sigs on the FS forum at the moment - they're pretty nice.
