i broke my nw-e505 because i sat on it and the play button got crushed.

anyway. i really love the sound on it, and i was wondering which other sony mp3 players are good. The hard drive based ones don't sound as good...I tried my friend's and it just wasn't as bassy and clear.

is the new noise canceling one good?

the noise-cancelling sound is awesome with the headphones that come WITH the player. Aside from that, they're pretty weak at powering hungrier headphones.

^well, i had a pair of super.fi 5 pro's up until two weeks ago. they've now mysteriously disappeared but i plan to replace them with another pair of iems...maybe the um2. it should be okay with iems, right?

thanks

yeah they should be fine with iems. Don't expect them to go as loud as one would expect though.

Yes, the Sony NW-S706 has the best sound quality of any player I've had. Regrettably I sold it as I needed the extra capacity offered by the NW-A808, and while it still has very good sound quality, it lacks the 'warmth' I loved about the 706. I don't think you'd be disappointed with either one though.

It seems that some people prefer the more analytical sound of the 808, and others prefer the richness of the 706. The 706 is like listening to vinyl, and the 808 is like listening to cd - does that make sense?

Yes, the 70X series is good, period. They have low headphone out power, however, so don't expect to reach high volumes, even with the 13 ohm supplied phones.

the s706 was one of the best players i've ever encountered until the kenwood. unfortunetly the input on the headphone jack is broken...

Are you deaf mate - My S705 is louder than my ZVM - and if I listen to any more then 20/30 it hurts my ears!!!

Maybe you only use IEMs.. They lose so much power with Sony fullsized headphones. And trust me, I can tolerate the max on both the zvm and the S705. S705's max barely pushes it, while the ZVM (muffled soundish) is mildly painful.
