Hey Ray. I've had Sirius for 2 years now. I received it as a gift .... the small Sportster receiver, the jambox, and a car kit. I was using it w/ my Philips system from Sam's, running out of the headphone jack to rca.

Onkyo has just released a dual XM/Sirius receiver and that is the the big question .... the pending merger.

I'm now running it into a NAD 7225 PE. I was getting better terrestrial coverage in the city. I had to go out a window here to aim it properly. It has sounded much better lately, but I cannot listen to classical or jazz for an extended time. Not sure the $30 satellite antennae would help much, but it might. A better receiver sounds more like it. They top out before they go to the multi-channel systems at around $300-$400.

I finally used the car kit last summer on a little roadtrip, the reception was better than at home. It uses an FM transmitter. It's a very simple little dock, you just have to run your antennae cable out the window. It's a magnet for the roof.

Also ... when we visited LA last summer the rental had XM. It was very cool having it on the dial. We cruised around listening to the 30's/40's channel (801), and now I listen to that channel thru the Direc TV sometimes , but otherwise I prefer the programming on Sirius. I wouldn't mind hearing the Bob Dylan show on XM.

Hope that helps you out.

I do not think either has great SQ. If you use it with just a basic setup it will sound ok. If you use it with a revealing setup then you will hear the compression etc. It is great on the go though. I use XM mostly for talk/comedy/sports but not music.

I have had XM for years and although the reception is spotty in places, it still is a HELL of a lot better than standard radio format.

As to what to buy now? Get something cheap. I can't guess what the future holds for this format so do not go too deep $$ wise into it.

Thanks for the great information!
I was planning to use it as a Hi End substitute for the home.
I am glad you told me that the SQ would not be hi end.
I will go another route.
Thanks again,
Ray
