Hey

I've been told that the grado sr 225 is the best headphones for rock.
Is that true or are there some that are better?
I will max spend 300$.

Thanks

I feel that the grado sr225 is the best rock headphone for under $300. The sr325 is much to bright and fatigueing.

Ditto.
All I have to add is that the flat pads from head-fi sponsor Todd are a must.

SR225 plus flats from todd will run you under your $300 with cash to spare and it will do you right by rock.

what about hd 580??

Almost everyone seems to love them..
Can they rock or should I stick with the sr225?

Can the sr 225 work well without an amp??

They are a more laid back sound. All the grado's are a faster and more in your face sound.

then i don't now what to get...

I listen mainly to rock, but that from radiohead to soilwork to a perfect circle to dream theater to ..........

So which one would do the best job, overall??

How about Alessandro MS1 or MS2??

well if it helps, a 580 (300 Ohms) will need an amp, a 225 (32 Ohms) won't.

The Grado's should work fine without an amp whereas it's my feeling that a decent amp is almost a requirement for the HD580's. Regardless, amped or not I think the Grado's would be better for rock. I have RS-1's and I prefer them to the 580's for every genre but they excel at rock. You haven't heard guitar until you've heard it through a Grado.

Another vote for sr225!!!
It will cost you $200 max and save you $100 from your budget which you can add in the future to get hd580 to cover most genre of music.
SR225 are fine unamped, but better amped.

It is true, in this price range.

SR325 are also very good, but sometimes they sound too bright (depending on the recording).

It's better to get them both.

but how about Alessandro MS1 or MS2??

Heard that they are modded grados.
Are they better or just the same.
And can they be bought in Europe?

ARE YOU STONED? NO! Noooooo!

I've owned a DT880. Aside from progressive, these things do not have the energy or agression for rock. Ugh. Great set of cans, but... UGH! I can't believe someone would recommend DT880s for rock.

I will throw in another vote for the SR225. I currently own the Alessandro MS2 and find them a bit too 'honky' for my tastes. However, I may just not be a Grado person, especially considering most people like the MS2 over the SR225. If you find yourself having a similar affliction, dial 1-800-AKG-K240 for assistance.
