I'd like to order online and get the best deal. Lowest I have seen is $228 + shipping and that is still a lot.

They want broken Karmas to mod them to 40gb. The drive can be purchased online, so some people want to keep their existing Karmas intact, but buy a karma w/ a failed hard drive, in order to mod them.

The word on riovolution is that there is some sort of bug in hitachi's drive firmware that causes the read/write head to get stuck to the HD platter. While this happens very rarely and can be fixed with a hard knock against the table, it would be wise to get some sort of extended warente. I have a best buy 4 year plan and can return my player for store credit when the next greatest dap comes out.

I wouldn't say very rare. Very rare, I would say, is about one in a thousand or less, but the rate of HD failure in Karmas are probably more like one in ten. Or possibly more.

1/10 is an absurdly high estimate. I know several people with a karma, myself included and no HD failures. Not to mention you can buy an extended warranty and get a 20 gig player with rca line out on the dock, supports gapless/vorbis/flac, 15 hour battery life for less than the competition and not have to worry about the HD.

thanks head-fiers, I have placed an order for the Rio Karma. I have already owned several rio products and they have all been good to me. I am using a Rio Cali and it has not failed me. I am looking forward for my Karma.

The reason why I decided to go with the Rio Karma is because of the excellent EQ and excellent battery life. It is also more compact than the apple. I also happen to hate Apple as a company (they screwed us E-magic/PC users), so...

karma is also 1 gram lighter than the 20 gig ipod. It is smaller in every way (albeit not much) except thickness, which is important if you wear tight leather pants.
