My vote goes for one of the old-school Sharp Mini-disc player/recorders that had one of the most powerful amp sections of a portable ever (70x/72x/831/???). Add a pair of Etymotic ER4's (take your pick of the P or the S (my preference)) and you are set for musical bliss in a miniscule package.

Perstel DR101 portable DAB Radio & Koss KSC-35

although that only works if you can get a good signal lock... apart from that, the old veterans, the D211 and D311 come to mind, with whichever headphone floats your boat

My idea of the ultimate portable setup is a small MP3 player with lots of space and highly portable yet wonderful sounding headphones. I think the Rio Karma and Etymotic ER-4P would fit the bill. Or whichever HD MP3 player works best with the Ety's. MP3 is the most convenient format for me.

maybe instead of searching for a old portable minidisc recorder for it's higher output... why not just get some HDD player with insane headphone output? (ipod, iriver, rio ect ect...[i kno im missing something here...but cant remember])

Me, too! You just can't beat having your entire music library stored right inside the player. After getting used to that, the thought of carrying around a stack of minidiscs or CDs is very unappealing. Plus, I never have to waste time trying to decide which discs to take along with me...

I thinking minidisc too, but wondering if the sound quality improves further if a dedicated home recorder is used to do the recording rather than using the portable player to do the recording. I’d like to listen to (uncompressed) classical music. Any comments?

Not sure about the player but Sensaphonics ProPhonic SOFT 2X will beat all the Etys hands down. Its like comparing HP-1000 to HD580. (sorry, but true.)

That's the first time I've heard of that brand Steele. Looks interesting. Have you ever posted a review of your impressions with this phone?
