I got a pair of PMX 60's last week cuz I needed a set right away. Spend $50 CDN on them. Now i have a lil more time to do it right. These headphones are obviously not good even to a n00b like myself... the bass is just horrible.

So, What are the best cans (for portable use) I can get for $50 CDN ($40 USD)? I hear KOSS has a good set for $15 (KSC 75), but is there another set under $50 that are better?

Thanks

ughn man $50CAD for that, you got ripped off.

yeah the ksc75 is supposed to be pretty good, i only heard the ksc35 though. the senn mx500 is decent too if you want earbuds and the open of your earcanal isnt too small.

imo the px100 is the best portable for that price but it might be a bit more than $50CAD.

If you don't need isolation then I don't think you could do much better than the Koss KSC-35's. They're especially good if you want good bass. They're discontinued supposedly but you can still get them at Koss.com for $35 or so shipped.

I think terrymx's recommendations represent the forum's consensus well.
under US$20 earbuds -> MX500
under US$20 clip-on -> KSC75
under US$50 portable headphone -> PX100

If you want earbuds, the next best thing from the MX500 is probably the Sony MDR-E888LP but you're looking at a x3 price jump. With clip-ons, the next best from KSC75 is ATH-EW9/EM but coming at a x10 price jump.

I would go with the PortaPro any day.

Another vote for the Porta-Pro. Koss also makes an inexpensive canalphone, the Spark Plug, not to be confused with the original Plug. Sound is decent for under $20 and I have fond memorys of it as my first foray into the world of IEM's.

I have heard that Akg 26 P's are pretty good. Check headroom for a total price shipped to U.S. for $44.

I got a set of Koss ProX-1s for my iPod, and I sent them back. The bass was WAY too overbearing. I exchanged them for a set of Sennheiser PX-100s and I am much happier.

See ya

I second that- KTXPro1s are VERY bassy- I was very dissappointed when I first heard them. Obviously the KSC75s or KSC35s don't have that problem or they wouldn't be recommended so much (am I right?).

IMHO the KSC75 has ample bass too. But thats why I modded mine to open up the mids and highs more. Now theyre 10 times better in terms of spectral balance.

To my ears:
KSC-35 Deep Bass but fairly tight. IMO very nicely reproduced.
PX100 more extended Bass but slower and less detailed. These phones definitely exhibit the so called Senn veiled or dark sound.

I use and enjoy both sets quite a bit but if I could have only 1 set of portable open cans, I would lean towards the Koss KSC line.

The Portapros are really nice Cans.
1) Sound great - not many folks don't like them
2) Fold up - Fold into a small package for portability
3) Rugged construction
4) Price OK
