To me the best performance was in 86 when Smokey Robinson performed the Anthem fading into America the Beautiful (At the World Series) - Goosebumps.

The Whitney Housten one for the Superbowl is the best that I can recall.

Though biased, I always loved the arrangement I played with the USC Marching Band. Instrumental only (of course) where a solo trumpet plays the first few measures, then the rest of the trumpets join in, and, finally, the rest of the band joins in.

It's a unique take on the anthem, but I love how the solo grabs the audience's attention before everyone else blends in. The performance is otherwise straightforward and respectful. No odd tempo or key changes. The trumpet solo is similar to a military bugle call and we always picked a music performance major who could nail it.
