What's the current best PCDP right now. Doesn't matter if it's only available in Japan. Lineout performance is important too.

To my ears it's clearly the Grundig SQUIXX CDP 4100 / CDP4101 AS10 - powerful 2x 15 mW headphone out, very good line out and not very expensive... No-nonsense design, too.

Cool players, but how do we get them in USA/Canada?

Hmm... I never thought of the European market. I have a friend going to Hong Kong and Japan so I was thinking along the lines of players that are available there.

Well, as far as I know Grundig only sels in America those neat radios and a strange cd player with clock and detachable speakers. Maybe you are better with someone in Europe sending it to you or getting a vendor who ships to the U.S.
