I listen to dancy club music, so I'm leaning away from the senns because everybody says they are laid back and relaxing, not very upbeat and dancy, but the grados are regarded as not very comfortable...

basically, i'm going to be wearing these headphones for hours and hours at a time, so comfort is important
isolation doesn't matter, and i'd like a headphone that can grow with me as i upgrade my source, add an amp, etc...

<-- me

my source is a computer, i plan on building my own external DAC and amplifier down the road
i play lots of games, positioning is extremely important to me

Stuff I listen to, in order from most to least:

electronica with lots of high pitched vocals (Happy Hardcore) or male vocals (BT) or just no vocals at all
Stuff Like No Doubt / Red Hot Chili Peppers / The Offspring
Linkin Park's "Reanimation" album (what genre is this?)
Alanis Morrissette stuff

as you can see, relaxing laid back headphones like the HD580 aren't for me...

is it true the grados are uncomfy? i couldn't find a real answer to this by searching

sorry about the rambling, i took a dose of nyquil about an hour ago

Yes, the grados are indeed uncomfortable after one or so, what happens is that there will be pressure points on your ears because it is touching the driver casings. and there is only a layer of plastic between the driver and your ear, so there is no pads or cotton stuff in between.

the great thing is about the grado, they sound amazingly good with dancing music, i have the sr80 and the bass is just excellent....the bass extends, especially with stuff by Orbital and Hybrid.

I think what you are looking for is a pair of Sony V6. even though i dont know how it sounds, ive read many people complimenting on its punchy-ness and overall full sound. people say its extremely comfortable too. I dont think the v6 are better than the grados in sound quality.

Ive seen comparison review before......stax, sr80, and v6.

v6 got a score of 7.6
sr80 score of 8-9 (i forgot)

Im sure you can find the site if you do a google search with the 3 cans.

Why is no Sony a rule? Their good cans are good cans. Nevermind the bad ones.

and i pretty much hate the bastards except for their high end stuff *cough* g90 *cough*

on another note, nyquil doesn't work...gah...

on yet another edit, i just thought you should all know i'm listening to No Doubt's "Marry Me" through earbuds that probably sell for $4.99, and cost about $0.80 to make....gah...

Ha, you dont even own the most basics of phones, no koss ksc?

and i bet the buds you are using really suck, if you take out the pad...is it shaped circular and the plastic is light grey. hhahhhah. ive had those too, Walgreens sell those, and Koss sell them for 4.99 too.

go get yourself some ksc50, just for a quick fix.

Ive tried the nyquil once, and that knocked me out in less than 20 mins.

I think you dumped that $30 into the wrong quick fix
wink.gif

A pair of porta pros or ksc-35 or even ksc-50 would have fixed you up plenty good

AKG K501s are supposed to be lacking in bass, not good for a dance music fan.

The V6 are good. I'm not familiar with this g9 thing

You might want to try the CD3000 by sony.

Btw, I don't think you named a budget.

One thing about the 580. They aren't really laid back, they're only relatively laid back. My ears will overload and the treble will just keep going louder and louder w/o a hitch, so unless you've heard other very high end phones and do a comparison, I don't think you will complain. It's a pity the newegg deal is off though.

Well, how about the 590? They are more forward than the 580 and have all the senn comforts senn is known for.

I am definetly not a basshead, but i do enjoy hearing really really deep bass that i've never heard before in a song that i've listened to a thousand times, but who doesn't?
wink.gif

i despise humps around the mid to upper bass region, it's just bleh
...and according to neruda, the akgs have great impact, and i guess that's what matters

Regarding Grados as uncomfortable....many here feel they are VERY comfortable and even more so than other phones because they are very light. The head-band is adjustable (bendable as well) and can easily be conformed to almost anyone's head. Try them out at a local dealer before you dismiss them...SR60's good choice and easily driven from your sound card.
