I prefer a linear, neutral, reference headphone except with emphasis on the bass. Needs oomph, meaning great extension as well as quality and quantity (nothing like rattling my head, but certainly not lacking like a AKG Q701). Soundstage is quite important as well as imaging so I can benefit from that in gaming. My previous AKG Annies were great for this, but ultimately, left me wanting in the bass department. I also just want to try out the planars.

No to HE-400. I'd tend to think HE-560 might do nicely. Still I think it's a toss up between 5LE/4/500. They all have pros and cons, really. I'd say 500 is the most coherent and natural sounding, but 5LE has a brighter and more diffused sound with bigger sound stage but not as coherent and natural.

I don't quite follow.. Regardless, HE-5LE is often quoted as a more refined HE-4. How come it be that we haven't discussed amping yet? So, what do you plan to use for amping, some of these require a lot of juice?

More refined... What does that mean? How's the bass? Soundstage/imaging? I don't know. I could have sworn I answered that. Harman Kardon AVR 254 then later a X-FI Titanium HD.

I did say a thing or two earlier in the thread. Haven't heard the he-4 extensively, though.
You'll have to use the speaker outputs on the avr to drive those headphones. Or get a suitable amp.

Overall a great suggestion. I edited my initial post and title (to include $500 more doll hairs), lol. Still would like it to at least be under $750 though. Also added more to the votes. Any other suggestions (make sure to read what I edited ).
