There's not too many straight-up country songs that I feel are revolutionary, or have acheived something original. But that's not why I listen to Country music. I listen to Country music because I grew up listening to our local country radio station (AM) and that's all my dad would let us listen to. When I reached my teens I branched out into every other kind of music whether my dad liked it or not, but I developed a sense of "home" when listening to country. Some of my favorite country songs are:

George Straight: The Fireman - I've been singing along with this song since I was knee-high to a grasshopper.

Garth Brooks: Shameless - In highschool we'd sing this one when we got really drunk.

Brad Paisely: I'm Gonna Miss Her - Tell that woman what the deal is, brotha. I hope some day that I become a professional bass fisherman. If you haven't tried bass fishing folks, you're missing out.

George Jones: White Lightning - For some reason I identify with this song.

Marty Robbins: Almost all of his songs - I have a real fondness for his ballads, and I can't explain why?

Glen Campbell: A lot of his songs - he's a wonderful country guitarist

Fun thread. I'm not usually a country music listener, but a few songs have managed to get stuck in my head over the years, so I guess I would consider those my favorite. I realize most of them are "pop-country" and might not be of the highest quality, but that is probably the reason that I liked them in the first place. Here you go:

"Next to You, Next to Me" - Shenandoah -- This song is like crack-cocaine. I know I shouldn't like it as much as I do, and I've listened to it about a million times. It's just so damn catchy though. My personal favorite.

"If I Didn't Have You" - Randy Travis

"Calling Baton Rouge" - Garth Brooks

"Nothin' to Lose" - Josh Gracin

"I'm Allright" - Jodee Messina

"Green Grass Grows" - Tim McGraw

I like roots country/bluegrass. Modern "country" tends to be a little homogenized for my taste. I know it's hokey, but I must admit that my favorite song played on country radio is "Man of Constant Sorrow". I also thought that Garth Brooks took country in some new and interesting directions.
