Hey everyone, I’m looking for a high end headphone for gaming. My budget is $300-$500. I’m learning the ropes here so feel free to educate me. My current setup is a Pioneer Elite receiver SC-65 hooked up to my Xbox X via HDMI. After reading and digging through all these posts within the forums, I ended up buying a Sennheiser HD598, which I’m digging. I also pre-ordered Sennheiser 6xx through Massdrop, but won’t arrive until March 2018.

I want to know what you guys recommend for the best open headphones for less then $500? Is anything around that price range overkill for gaming?

HD700. Very particular for music, but damnit if they arent the best headphones Ive had for gaming. Highly detailed and the lower end is just right for immersion.

Thank you everyone for the info. They do look very good and enticing. I hope Massdrop makes a special version of the HD700. Looks sexii. Im curious how they compare to the 600 and 650.

Compared to the HD600, the soundstage is much larger. The upper end is very detailed and is perfect for detecting footsteps. The lower end has enough thump to give immersion while never intruding on the detail.

For music, I prefer the HD600. Its not great at all for gaming though.

Have tried a few sets, would recommend you pick up a pair of Fidelio X2's for ~$150-170 and save your money. Great soundstage for directional perception, very comfortable, no sibilance. Added benefit of being able to use a v-moda boompro with these.

Have to agree with the choice of the HD 700s. They are really good for gaming, doesn't matter if you use it for pure sound or competitive gaming.
I can also recommend the Beyerdynamic DT990 for a cheaper option. I use them purely for gaming.

I tend to agree. I've got AD700, M1060, X1 (not the X2's), HD6xx, and Fostex T-X0. The X1's and M1060's are 1 and 1A for me for 90% of the time. Since my modmic sticky part fell off the M1060's, I reach for the X1's more, just because ease of use with the VModa boom pro. If I don't need a mic, still go for the M1060's. If I'm looking just at footsteps for competitive play, I use the AD700's.

The HD6XX are okay but the soundstage is smaller than the others. They have more bass than the HD600's and would sound 'better' for gaming, but I prefer X1's or M1060's by a mile for almost all of my gaming.

Someday, I'd like to try the HD700's, but I'd like to try them to see how they compare to what I've got. I've basically have side grades with ease of use bonuses when using a mic.

+1 DT990 is very good for gaming, I use it as my backup pair behind HE-400i.

I feel the DT990's more prominent bass leads to better immersiveness while the HE-400i has better imaging, more detail, and is more comfortable (DT990 triggers a hotspot on the top of my skull worse than any other headphones I have). However, with a Loki the HE-400i + Loki basically relegated my DT990s to the stand...until the HE-400i's yoke broke. So now I'm thankful I have the DT990 in reserve

Looking to get a HD700 after seeing repeated endorsements in a few threads here.
