Best Opamp for the Pimeta?

May 24, 2007 at 9:33 PM Post #2 of 27
8620 is the dual version of the 8610. In the Pimeta, use the 8620 on the stereo channels (it must be a dual opamp on the stereo channels) and the 8610 on the ground channel.

If you are using the 8610 on both, then you have problems friend.

I've tried AD627, AD8620/10, and AD843. I like AD627 best (nice and neutral with perhaps a little warmth), followed by AD8620/10 (a little bit highs-focused (I thought cymbals sounded kind of "splashy") but still a great performer).

But the AD843 is a really neat, gutsy sound if you're less into neutrality than into something with more kick, particularly in the lows. (It was long enough ago now that I don't feel I can describe it with any precision.)

I think maybe you mean OPA627, not AD627. The AD843 is definitely an aggressive chip, but it also sucks current out of a battery powered version like there's no tomorrow.

I like the AD8066/8055 the best.

Some other similar discussions here (use the search feature) mention the OPA627, even though it might take some BrownDog adapters. I will be rolling from the AD8620 to the OPA627 later this year. But I really do like the AD8620. It seems to work well with the HD600s.

BTW: What headphones are you using cocolaj? That will definitely make a difference.

Yes, that's what I meant. Oops.

And I should have mentioned that about the 843 - really poorly suited for portable use, and runs quite warm besides.

I personally love the 627's in my pimeta, perhaps more so than the 637's, desktop amp, though.

as for 627s + portable, 2x BUFF634 + 627's +class A all around will give ya 4.5 hrs of play time on 2 9 V's... not the longest, but if you are just using it around town during the day, and can charge later on, you are in good shape

I am using Dual 8610 on the stereo channel and single 8610 on the ground channel. Would switchen til 8620 on the stereo channel improve the sound consideredly?

I would not recommend the AD8397 in any amp that was not designed to use it. Pimeta is such an amp. Stay with JFET input opamps to avoid excessive DC offset.

The 8620 and 10 are the same op-amp, just the 20 is a dual. I don't think it's a very good op-amp for audio in general; I never quite understood how it came to be popular versus the variety of very well performing op-amps AD produces. Maybe it's just that it was marketed side-by-side to the OPA627 and so got attention.

The best FET-input op-amp around is probably the OPA655; I can't think of anything better at the moment, but they're a tremendous pain to acquire. The OPA656 is pretty easy to acquire and cheap, but not as good, though still I'd imagine considerably better than the common alternatives *shrug*

Do you know where to buy the OPA656 (or better yet the OPA655)?
