Best of 2007 so far

Way too much Neon Bible hate. A victim of expectations, I imagine. Funeral is widely regarded as one of the top 10 albums of the past decade and puts Neon Bible in a weird position. Its a different record in ways, but still enjoyable. Seeing it live certainly helped, but tracks like No Cars Go and Bad Vibrations are very very good. It certainly isn't a perfect record, but there is no way it is a bad record. Not even close.

New Ryan Adams is pretty nice. Nothing groundbreaking, but a solid set of some very good songs. Something definitely worth picking up if you are a Ryan Adams fan, as everyone should be.

I've been pretty disappointed so far this year... the albums I had the highest hopes for have fallen short, from Bloc Party to Ted Leo to Voxtrot to Wilco, maybe I expected too much.

My favorites though, not in order

The National- Boxer
Panda Bear- Person Pitch
Elliott Smith- New Moon
Parts & Labor- Mapmaker

I know I'm forgetting a few, but those stick out for me.

widely regarded? by who? i mean it is great and gets a lot of positive comments, but what exactly do you mean by that?

on a side note, i would say that i prefer Funeral by a fairly large margin. some of the stuff on NB just sounds sort of annoying (the title track in particular, i can't stand it). also, my NB on digital sounds almost bad...anybody else have this?

more props for Neon Bible...I really like this album (and Funeral)...I've hardly heard anything recorded like N.B., I have to play it really loud to really enjoy it or it sounds kinda sludgy. One of my fave's from '07 so far.
I also Really like:
Panda Bear - 'Person Pitch'
The National - 'Boxer'
Voxtrot - 'Mothers, Daughters, Sisters EP'
Feist - 'The Reminder'
NIN - 'Year Zero'
rerelease of Lisa Germano - 'Ballad for Liquid Pig' (I'll count it as new...)
Have to add Joanna Newsom - 'Ys Street Band EP'...this is a fantastic release

anxiously awaiting Angels of Light - 'We Are Him', new Akron/Family, New Pornographers, more than I'm not thinking of.
Honestly, I'm listening to much more old stuff lately, esp. Mono. reissues of the Byrds, the Kinks, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac...yea, I'm a nerd.

Probably The Boxer for me too. Just a very classy record, start to finish. Not perfect on first listen, but getting there.

Also love the new Andrew Bird. Really is like an old friend. Hard to ignore anyone with a streak of albums this good. Almost like Spoon. And the new Spoon is on the horizon. Bound to be one of the best of the year.

The latest from Blonde Redhead is really nice too. One I listen to over and over.

And Thirteen Cities, the latest from Richmond Fontaine. Wow, this is some good stuff. One of the best image makers writing lyrics today. Listen to this much, and ... it's like you've lived it.

Similarly, just picked up the latest from Richard Buckner on Merge Records. Called simply Meadow. Man, great stuff. What a great career. Thought it was 2007, but guess it's from late last year. Quite a band on this one. He really puts it out there.

Really looking forward to the latest from Wayne Robbins & the Hellsayers. Loved the debut. Soon ...

TON - Dead Again (type o neg return to winning form)
Moonsorrow - V Havitetty (consistently excellent dark metal)

Intersted in hearing new Neurosis, just picked up new Marilyn Manson........also new White Stripes soon

Update
newest Marilyn Manson was lame weak and uninspired.......will not buy any future MM albums

New Neurosis was very good, a bit slower and less frenetic than 1990s works but any fan of Isis, Tool etc should get this

Listened to samples of national - boxer........I don't get it, sounds pretty average to me and all songs are very similar sounding

I would put Porcupine Tree on the list but I think previous album deadwing was much better

How about it indeed!!

I've been meaning to post a review about this album, but I've been slammed at home and at work with other stuff. Hopefully this week...

I think it's his best work since You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic, FWIW.

1. Porcupine Tree - Fear Of A Blank Planet
2. Dominici - O3 A Trilogy Part 2
3. Redemption - The Origins Of Ruin

Biggest disappointment: Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos

Huh... I will give Neon Bible a few more spins. Sometimes it takes awhile for a record to sink in, but it hasn't so far. Thing is, Funeral has some amazing hooks that pulled me in. So good, I don't even have a favorite song on it. Still haven't found a strong hook in Neon Bible, unfortunately. No one song has pulled me in, which is weird considering how strong their first record was.

I know what you mean about the hooks, Uncle. Usually, one song song has to catch, and then I listen to the entire album in terms of that first song. it's kind of a strange way to listen, but it's how I digest music. Tunnels and Laika both grabbed me on Funeral, and all my listening was based on those songs.

I feel safe saying "no cars go" will be that song for you on Neon Bible. Listen to it a few times. You won't be disappointed.

Like a lot of people, I found The National - Boxer outstanding, but I can't believe that nobody mentionned Bright eyes "Cassadaga". This is a wonderful CD. I have never really care for them prior to this one. But Cassadaga got me hooked to these guys.
