Best of 2007 so far

Alright, I also have to add to the list:

The Book Of Knots - Traineater

I just picked it up yesterday and can't stop listening to it. Guest appearances by Tom Waits, Kathleen Brennan, Mike Watt and Carla Bozulich among others. Very engaging record, although definitely not for everyone...

I can't remember if this was late '06 or early '07 but David Gilmour - On An Island. Also Kenny Wayne Shepherd - 10 Days Out and Tori Amos - American Doll Posse. I think Natalie Merchant also has a new one out that I have to pick up.
Oh, and let's not forget Johnette Napolitano - Scarred

It seems like I've mostly picked up metal albums so far this year, so I'll start with those and fill in the other genres later.

Cage - Hell Destroyer (I didn't think there were any bands recording old school albums like this anymore. Sounds like 'Stormrider' era Iced Earth mixed with Judas Priest's 'Painkiller' with a bit of modern Jag Panzer for good measure.)

Cephalic Carnage - Xenosapien (Although I was already familiar with the band's earlier works, I was surprised by the quality of this album. The overall composition of the songs has improved and the technicality has been ratcheted up a few notches as well.)

Vintersorg - Solens Rotter (Vintersorg returns to his roots with his most folk oriented album since Odemarkens Son.)

Type O Negative - Dead Again (Type O Negative returns to a faster, more raw sound on this album, with great results.)

Symphony X - Paradise Lost (Nope, Symphony X still haven't put out a bad album.)

Therion - Gothic Kabalah (I know there have been a lot of mixed reviews of this album, but so far I'm digging it. I appreciate that Therion is experimenting a bit more, as to not let their sound stagnate.)

I still have to listen to this, and I'm not sure I'm going to like the sound of a subdued New ***** album. I really think they are at their best with Neko singing on very upbeat songs.

HEY! That album is not out until August! How the....

I agree with the above statement, the Shins' "wincing the night away" CD is fantastic.

The new album is heavier than their previous works. I like it so far but need a few more listens before I add it to my best of 2007 list.

lol, a little piggy got hold of an advanced copy and was nice enough to play it for me. And I will say, upon the first couple listens, my suspicions about that album was right.

I didn't know the new album from The New Pornographers was out yet?

Feist - The Reminder
Apparat - Walls
Nick Warren - Global Underground Paris
Armin van Buuren - A State of Trance 2007

and a prediction:

Nicholas Hooper - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Soundtrack (if the samples are any indication)

I've not been impressed with a lot of the new indie albums from bands with previous well-respected records. There's just not a lot of evolution going on. I'm trying to get into some more indie stuff because I've been listening almost exclusively to electronic music for the past many years. I just don't think they're doing anything that innovative. Other than bands like Animal Collective and Radiohead (maybe Wolf Parade, Sigur Ros, Xiu Xiu, and Sufjan Stevens), I'm finding it difficult to find really innovative albums (which is why I love IDM so much).

Its not. August I think. It is available through somewhat nefarious means, however.

I think its fantastic. Ive spun it a bunch more times, and it may not be better than the last few, but it is certainly no worse. I cant imagine any fan not liking it.

Okay, it's been a month since my last post in this thread and I think it is time to update my list.

Wilco - "Sky Blue Sky" The hometown heroes definitely came through on this album, and in my opinion totally outdid "A Ghost is Born."

Ringo Shiina - "Heisei Fūzoku" I'm totally in love with this album. It fuses jazz, big band, and pop styles seamlessly, at the same time proving that Shiina is much more than just a (sexy) j-pop idol.

The Lord Weird Slough Feg - "Hardworlder" I'm calling it early. THIS is definitely my album of the year. When I try to conjure up in my mind what exactly the archetype of metal would sound like I invariably imagine something that sounds like one of Slough Feg's songs. I feel like I've stepped into the wayback machine and reentered the golden age of metal. Slough Feg has captured the catchiness of bands like Iron Maiden or Judas Priest along with guitar riffs of Tommi Iommi-like proportions. There is no shortage of standout tracks on this one: Tiger! Tiger!, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport Blues, Dearg Doom (an amazing cover of the already amazing song by Horslips), and Poisoned Treasures are all absolute killers. I know there are a few fans of Hammers of Misfortune on this board, so I urge you to check this album out. As far as I'm concerned Mike Scalzi (the lead singer / guitarist of both bands) has once again proved himself to be one of the most talented and interesting songwriters on the scene right now.

For me...

Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam
The New Pornographers - Challengers
Panda Bear - Person Pitch
The White Stripes - Icky Thump
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky

...have been getting A LOT of play recently. Also just got Spoon's new one and I think it's going to be in rotation a lot.

An an honorable mention to The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible. It was earlier this year, but still an amazing album.

edit: Oh damn how could I have forgotten Amon Tobin - Foley Room!!? And Voxtrot's first full album is very satisfying as well.

Panda Bear - Person Pitch
The Bees - Octopus
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Dandelion Gum
Justice - Cross
Thurston Moore - Trees Outside The Academy
The Tough Alliance - New Chance
Spoon - Ga Ga...

Argh! It's so hard to only pick a few!
