Best non-isolation portable earphones?

Hi all, I'm currently looking for a decent set of phones for on the go use. I love my shure e3's, but the isolation factor is great in some situations, but extremely inconvenient in others. Basically, I'm looking for some light, portable headphones for on the go listening in which I'm actually aware of my surroundings. Shure e3's are unusabld around my friends, and I shudder at the thought of merrily walking across a street and getting mowed down by an approaching car that I couldn't hear. I own the senn mx500's, and they were pretty decent but they're also a tad bit broken now due to neglect. Should I rebuy them? Is there anything better about the newer mx550's? Should I go mx440's? Is koss's ksc series a better alternative? Should I look for something else? Remember I'm looking for cans for use with an unamped mp3 player that can fit in my pocket with relative ease. Suggestions?

however you don't need good sq if you don't want issolation in certain areas
you won't hear any detail walking down a street in boston or NY
