In no particular order:

Jaco Pastorius
Charles Mingus
Paul Chambers

That's wierd, I just noticed that all three of their last names end in a "s". Maybe there's something to that?

Live or on recordings?

I saw Pastorius live just before is death and it was awfull. I'm pretty sure that even Gpalmer could have sound better than what I heard that night....

Since there have been a lot of mentions already, I'll just add someone less known: Georg Breinschmid (Austrian dude)

That kid used to play on the Vienna Philarmony, then switched to jazz.
If you want to listen to something really crazy:

Artist/group: Vienna Art Orchestra (It's a sort of jazz orchestra, not really a big band)
Cd: Duke Ellington's Sound of Love (not volume 2, just the normal one)
track: Take the A-Train
Incredible bass solo

I love Charlie Haden's music, really do, but I don't think he's a great player technically seen. When I saw him live with Pat Metheny he didn't play very well, maybe just a bad day.

And how could I have forgotten....

Adding to my earlier list:

Scott Lafaro, the great jazz bass player with the original Bill Evans Trio. He died tragically in a car accident not long after the classic '60s Village Vanguard sessions, in Flint, NY, just a few miles from where I live.

Not really a friend of "best so and so..." threads... Anyway, lots of really great jazz bassists have already been mentioned.

Christian Mc Bride
Dave Holland
Avishai Cohen
Eddie Gomez
Jimmy Haslip
George Mraz
Scott Colley
Charles Ables
Steve Swallow
have been left out however.

I'm sure there are lots more one could name as "great"

I say Mingus but he constantly deferred to Willie Dixon as the greatest Musician who ever lived.
