I need to purchase some new phones. Unfortunately, the main priority is not sound quality. Its comfort and isolation. Probably all I'll listen to with them is AM radio. I plan to wear them at night, probably even sleep with them in. Why such a strange use? Well, I'm a light sleeper and my wife snores. And I like to fall asleep listening to the radio, usually ESPN radio. So my plan is to put them in, listen to the radio, then sleep with them in to get some quiet.

Are the Ety's likely to be comfortable enough to sleep in? Since ultimate sound quality isn't important, I'm thinking of the ER-6's since they're a lot cheaper. The only other model I can think of is the new Shure's which are supposed to be very comfortable.

Any suggestions on this strange request?

Won't the MDR-EX70's work better? They're 'single-sided' so you won't find you've strangled yourself with the cord

I hadn't thought of those. The single-sided cord would be a benefit. I dind't know that any of this type of phone had that. Do you know how the isolation of these compares to the Ety's?

I'm an inveterate insomniac and sometimes attempt to sleep with headphones. I've tried the Etys and the EX70s and, of the two, only the Sony is remotely workable for me.

The best phone for sleeping that I've found is the Sony GL-72--one of the much maligned street models. I normally use these for audiobooks while working out, but I recently discovered that I could lie on my side in relative comfort while wearing them. Their shallow, flat shape disperses the pressure on the outer ear and allows the pillow to easily conform to them.

These leak, of course, so, depending on the volume you require, they may or may not work for you.

Trust me... you don't want to sleep with the Etys. At least not the 4P/4S. That would be bad, very bad... like into your brain bad!

i used to have a "pillow speaker" under my pillow. at the time they went for under $10. couple that to a radio with a sleep function and you have a viable solution. don't the snore pads (that bridge the nose like a band-aid) work on your wife? or that stuff you squeeze into your throat (i've laways wondered if it isn't just gycerine). baring that, have you ever tried a nice glass of red wine before going to sleep? (well, actually your wife should take the wine).

While the EX-70's are a cheaper alternative to Ety's, they are not single-sided. They have an uneven y-type cable that allows easy wrap around the back of the neck, and therefore more 'out-of-the-way' than dangling in front. They are good at lower volumes too. Good choice here.

Sounds like the EX-70's may be the way to go. Upon searching, it seems a few other people have had success with this phone for this application. My only concern is if it is isolating enough.

I think that was what he meant...
