Best Home Theater Setup for $300

Your budget is pretty low for a home theater system,  its going to cost you that much for a semi decent reciver.  Most of the low cost all in one packages with reciever and speakers sound like crap.

Maybe just look for a decent cinema soundbar, and add the subwoofer later. Here's an interesting example of a unit where the subwoofer is built into the receiver:

Of course there are many choices:

Those Yamaha hybrid units are very weird to say the least; I'd suggest trying one (or one of the Yamaha low profile subs that they're based on) before you buy. Don't take this to mean they're "bad" - they're just...odd.

Otherwise, +1 to the soundbar suggestion. I know Sony had a wireless package that did HDMI a few years ago that was right around $300 - like this thing: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&searchType=search&storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&productId=8198552921666308122 (that's probably not the exact one; it was just on their homepage and it's on sale).

If the OP could increase his budget a bit and was willing to take a chance on used system, this is what I use with the TV and I highly recommend it:

Those went for $500 new, and they have a new one out now that would double the OP's budget:

Have you considered any Sony equipment? I use these for my 5.0 setup in my apartment and they sound great for the price.

Also check Craigslist for excellent home audio deals. If you live in a big city a lot of people are looking to get rid of great vintage equipment for next to nothing. I got a Yamaha VX371 receiver for $80.
