Sorry if such a thread has already been created somewhere, a quick search led to no recent results...
 
 
I've just ordered a hd650 and I'm wondering what I could use to feed it.
 
I know that the hd650 is not the most picky headphone around and that I could certainly live with a more modest amp but I'd like to remove all the "what-ifs" from my mind and cure my G.A.S for a while..
 
Budget : less than 1800$ used.
 
Type : Tube or solid state, even though I'd prefer tubes.
 
 
As I've said above I'd rather buy an used amp, for the usual reasons.
 
So, what's your opinion? Blockhead? Zana? Sonett?

The Burson Audio HA-160D Pairs well with the HD-650.  It is priced around $1000 or less and comes with a DAC as well as headphone amp.

The Headroom Ultra Desktop Amp is another amp that I love with the HD-650.  It is a bit warmer sounding than my Grace Design m903 which pairs well with the HD-650.  It is priced around $1600 and is the highest quality and best sounding amp Headroom offers that they hand make themselves.

The thing to note about the HD-650 headphone is that it sounds quite veiled at low volumes.  If driven well and turned up to loud listening levels the HD-650 can sound amazing out of almost any decent amp be it tube or solid state.

Thanks for the ideas, I knew about the ha-160 but I didn't think of the headroom. I will investigate.
 
The veil isn't a problem for me, even though a little bit of added clarity wouldn't hurt (especially for low volume listening...)

I also tried it with the Lehmann Black Cube.. a really good pairing

Find a used Beta 22, you should easily be able to get a standard 2 channel or 2 channel with active ground for less than $2000. It outperforms everything near its price range IMO.
I was dead set on tubes until I heard the Beta 22, which has an extremely detailed, yet warm and groovy sound. I compared a Beta 22 and Zana Deux with HD650 and I preferred the Beta.

The 160D is a good value unit, i used it with my computer setup..driving my headphones and active monitor speakers. There's also the conductor, which is on another new level.

Man, I wish I could suggest something. If Dubstep Girl recommends the WA-6SE, check it out...I trust her ears.
 
FWIW, although I love my Lyr driving the 650's, I fully understand wanting to buy the right amp the first time, to avoid upgraditus.
