Hi, i started this thread after looking if there a similar one and its not, and i think thats interesting to find out peoples opinion about exemple of headphones or perhaps just a single one that hits that spot of diminuishing return, spot that if its crossed over you pay more and more for less and less...
So what do you think? I'll trow in some possbile candidates : Sennheiser HD580, Grado SR-325, AKG701 or even K1000.... Any other examples followed by strong arguments are welcome

P.S - sorry guys for gramatical errors - in the title is "that hits", my girlfriend got me distracted:P

I'd say for Grado it's the MS-1 at $99 worldwide. Perfect balance of bang for the buck, or "you get what you pay for." There is the SR60 which outperforms its price point, but the MS-1 is still better, and there is the SR225/325/RS series that outperform the MS-1 but cost double/triple/seventuple the amount.

I guess the SR225 may also qualify, but I'm biased as I even kinda like how the MS-1 sounds over the SR225, so shoot me.

any $300 can from usual suspects from Audio technica, AKG, Senn,Grado and Beyer. Anything more does increase in preformance in small increments but your wallet can really feel it at that point. For me, cans in the $500-1000 seem to be my sweet spot, its a big chunk more money for some refinement but i feel i dont miss out on anything.

For me, the K701 is just good enough (given my equipment) so that getting anything else would be kind of silly. I have dreams of the K1000 (and almost bought it on three or four occasions), but then realize my needs don't require anything more.

just get a top line can - HD650, K701, DT880, RS1/GS1000, W5000, etc. - and then the only upgrades you should have to worry about for a good while is your amp and source, which are the real wallet breakers.

Well....if you mentioned GS1000... Is it indeed good value for the money or is it just over the top?

For me, the SR60 hits the sweet spot. At $69 USD, it definitely over performs its cost. More expensive headphones do sound better, but it's not worth multiple increase in cost.

Ok; maybe this is just a little over the top, but to me the sweet spot takes the already great sound of the MS-1 and makes it a bit better.

....ok; maybe a bit more than just a bit better.

But adds the top of the line Grado headband; the same one used on the woodies, and tosses in some absolutely gorgeous aluminum housings along with exceptional workmanship(usually.

)to make a truly stunning package, but; that's just me!

To go beyond MS2i you need to get into the woodies and to my reasoning, the machined aluminum would probably cost about the same to produce as the wooden housings.

...of course ya gets even better SQ with those woodies and other driver tweaks!

I didn't subscribe to this at first, but the more people I speak to, whether in cans or speakers, the more I'm convinced that this is the case. Spend money trying out all the top-of-the-lines to see which sound you like most - pick it, sell the rest (they're like vultures on the FS forums here

). Then go the upgrade path.

Its like a...parallelized path of steepest decent greedy algorithm
blink.gif
! Except in headphones you can cover the search space in a finite amount of time! Of course, its also the path of steepest decent in terms of your wallet's health...
