This is my current system:


Grado SR-80

Panasonic SL-SW505 (using line-out)

4.5 Airhead.


I want a new pair of higher end phones. I listen mostly to movie sound tracks like Gladiator. My current setup sounds good.


Should I get Sennheiser HD600 for 300 dollars at HeadRoom, or what?

I wouldn't recommend sennheiser for a simple reason: you need a very good amp costing usually 2 - 3 times as much as senn for the senn to really sound fantastic. Otherwise you don't do them justice.
My vote goes to hd580 if you are really after the hd600's specific sound. The hd580 is much cheaper and sound almost the same as hd600 when driven using entry level headphone amp.

Otherwise , you might consider the beyer dt770pro(250 ohm). Very bassy .. might not be suitable for some people. But the bass is darn exciting. U might wanna try those out.

Wouldn't the HD 800's be ideal for soundtracks? Their clarity, imaging and deep bass paired with soundtracks such as "Gladiator" and "Pirates of the caribbean" sounds like a match made in heaven.

I find the HD800's outstanding for most high quality music recordings, but too bright for movie and TV voices.  The HD800s expose too much detail, particularly upper frequency sounds and harmonics that most TVs filter out.

Wagner, ahum, Hans Zimmer, is best on 'classical' headphones with some more bass. The more you spend, the more you will get (with diminishing returns).

Ortofon O-One or Ultrasone, those headphones are great for both gaming and movies.

I have a pair of HD650s (very similar to HD600s) and find them to be absolutley excellent with soundtracks.  However, like someone else said, the HD600/650 pretty much requires an amplifier to sound their best, though you'll notice an improvement over your current setup without one.

Hm looks like the 650 has taken a place on my list. But I just can't buy them, I have to listen to them first - and that I can't do. They are not available for a demo anywhere here. And since the HD 800 and the HD 650 appear to be so different, I can't judge how the HD 650 would sound by listening to the 800. Messy situation...
