You should check out the M2 and the AKG K545. If you can baby them, I highly recommend the Soundmagic HP150.

I realize that hating the ATH M50X's is apparently a well loved past time here... but I have had the ATH M50's for 4~yrs and a pair of M50X's for 2~years.

These are good out and about headphones (my M50's are after I modded them to removable cable setup after a mishap with the stock cable) ... fold up pretty good with the detachable cable on the 50X's pretty convenient.

Comfort is better on the M50X's than it was with the M50 stock.. but I still put Shure 840 ear pads on mine..

if I was going to critically listen in a dim lit room with a fine Cognac maybe the M50X's wouldn't be my first choice.. but they are fun and when using them while working or listening to music while reading the paper / having coffee.. quite fun sound indeed..   they also do a pretty good job at isolation.

I like the M50's they look good they are rugged .. easy enough to manage on the go...   are they the last word in Hi-Fi...no but they sound good and work well with portable use.

I can attest to the M50X's build quality and decent sound. Like the previous comment said, they aren't the last word in hi fidelity sound by any means, but they get the job done.

I've also seen a few posts about the M40X being overall flatter sounding than the 50's, but I've only listened to the 40's in a store for about 5 minutes so I can't give a good comparison between the two but I remember they did sound nice!

Checkout Zreviews and Innerfidelity on YouTube as a starting point to research MANY good headphones!
