Hi,

Really pleased I stumbled across this forum - its a mine of information!

I'm trying to decide on which headphones to buy for use with my Roland TD-6 electronic drum kit. I have narrowed my search down to these sets around my budget:

Sennheiser HD25
Beyer DT770M
Beyer DT770 Pro 250

I know that the DT770Ms were designed with the drummer in mind but I have also read a few negative reports of them, whereas I can only find positive reviews of the HD25s. I don't know how the DT770 Pro 250s would stack up in this application but I have read good things about them too.

Also, If I've missed any that are worth looking at then please let me know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Grados really make drums sound cool for regular music. I would assume it would do the same for a drum set. I like my sr80's as a possible phone.

I think it is important to use closed phones to block the noise of the sticks/pads!

i dont see a problem with the dt770m if your using them for drum monitoring...

You might want to consider the Etymotic ER-4. Their isolatiion and SQ are both top notch. The only problem might be microphonics if you can't route the wires behind your ears.

If IEMs won't work for you, I was surprised to hear a set of Ultrasone 650s yesterday at the local Guitar Center. They sounded really good to my ears on a 5 minute listening excursion.

I'd rather not go for IEMs. I've had a read up on the RP-21s and I think its now down to them and the DT770m. Anyone listened to both?

They will be hooked straight into the kit's module so would the lack of an amp be a problem with either of these sets?

Ultrasone Prolines (650/750 if you need closed, 2500 otherwise).

I swear, percussion is THE BEST thing about these headphones. I think they are slightly more expensive then what you are looking at (I think both around 260), but they honestly work marvelously. I also dare use them with my guitar amplifier =]

Also, I'd listen kwkarth, the guy does recording engineering/monitoring.

X2 except for the 650 coz I haven't heard them (yet).

DT770...I heard but just didn't like. 750/2500 much more punch, detail and clarity wich I think is quite handy when being used for a drumkit...

An update on the 650s...
I got them home and compared them to my reference cans and used a broader spectrum of music. They're not neutral, but they've been burning in for a couple days and they're getting better. The Beyer DT-250/80s are much more neutral, but don't have quite as much punch as the 650s. I am hoping that the 650s will continue to improve over the next couple days. I'm going to attempt to mix a gig with them this weekend, but I'm taking my ER-4s and my Beyer DT-250s along just in case.

Are you planning to use a head-amp with your cans?

I'll add the Ultrasones to the list. Are the 750s worth the extra over the 650s? They would be stretching my budget to the limit.

I like the price of the RP-21s, plus they appear to be more portable than the DT770m and the Ultrasones. It would be an added bonus if I could use the cans on the move. Another bonus would be if they were any good for gaming, but thats hardly a priority. Drumming is the most important consideration.

I wasn't planning to use an amp, I intended to hook the cans straight up to the drum kit's module. I could possibly use the amp from my PCs speaker system, its a fairly decent one.
