Best Headphones for Rush?

I usually listen to Rush (the band) and would like headphones that play them the best, but also can play hip hop with some bass when I'm in the mood. So far I've heard the Ultrasone DJ1's, the ATH-M50's, and the Shure SRH750 DJ's. Which one do you consider the best for what I am looking for?

Thanks!

Heya,

The HFI 580's or DJ1's (same thing) would be great for your needs. I've listened to rush through a lot of headphones, and for me at least, I like it when there's a good amount of bass and a nice sound stage.

Very best,

What are the differences between the two?

Cord style, aesthetics. Otherwise, it's the same headphone marketed differently.

Personally, while they are very different listening experiences, I don't think you will go wrong with either the Ultrasones or the Grados.

Your music (Rush, and then hip-hop) makes it a little difficult to whole-heartedly recommend a single headphone.

While great for hip-hop, I personally didn't like the Ultrasone headphones with rock or acoustic music.  The mids are somewhat recessed and the highs seem a little metallic -- just not a good sound signature for rock IMO.

The Grados, on the other hand, are great with rock, and will sound great with Rush.  The bass on them is decent, but perhaps not to the level you'd want for hip-hop.

If you're leaning towards closed headphones, overall I'd probably have to recommend the Denon D2000 or the Shure SRH-840.  I haven't had a chance to demo the Audio Technica ATH-M50, but based on what I've read, it's probably another option worth considering.

So between the Ultrasone HFI-580's and the Shure SRH840's, who's the winner?

I'd go with the Shure, but that's probably because I like Rush better than I like hip-hop

Having both, I'd also recommend the Shures. The HFi-580s are a little to bass heavy for Rush IMHO and the Shures will still deliver enough bass for other genres. You can't go wrong with SRH840s.

I would just like to thank everyone who has helped me out! I really appreciate it.

Last couple things:
It has a 6.3mm plug, so I assume I need to buy a 6.3mm to 3.5mm cable if I want to listen to music on my iPod?
Is that correct?

Also, should I get this amp with the headphones? It's cheap, so if its worth it, I might as well pick it up.

1. Yes. I like the Cardas one, but there are several at different price points. (Grado makes a nice one at $15 - http://www.amazon.com/Grado-Mini-Adaptor-Cable-Inch/dp/B001DK1ZVO )
2. No, I don't think you need the E5. Wait until you can spend another $50 or so, to get a CMOY, or similar amp under there if you want to start down that route.

Thanks! Yet again, I really appreciate everyone's help. I was a complete newbie to high-end headphones, and the Head-Fi community really made me feel welcomed and helped me out tremendously.

No need to spend even $15 on an adapter, go to Monoprice for an adapter. They are the same. I personally would not bother with one of those CMOY amps for a Shure 840 or a Grado, not necessary. The 840 is very good at sound isolation and has a warm, non-fatiguing sound. The Grado is more aggressive treble with wonderful midrange but less bass presence- both are good and depends on your personal preference.
Don't bother with cables or amps yet, try the headphones out and find your Lotus Land.
