First post here. Been browsing these boards for the past few days digging up information for the best gaming headphones that I can find for LAN conditions. I need something that can do a fairly decent job at blocking out external sounds so I can focus on my game and time item pickups etc. Also to tell where my enemies are coming from without being distracted by noises. So far I'm leaning towards the following:

Sennheiser HD280
Sony MDR-V6
Sony MDR-V900

From what I read on the boards the Sony MDR-V900 are overpriced for what they do but I can buy them used locally from a guy for around $100 USD. Is it any better than the two headphones listed above? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The 280s can be found for around $99. These or the V6s should fit the bill quite well.

The V6 should be the LAN standard. Durable, good bass, good direction cues, closed.

Try millionbuy.com, etronics.com, and outpost.com . Call ahead to make sure they have them in stock; they don't all update their websites accordingly. I paid $70 plus shipping for my V6s at Millionbuy.

if you want ideal, go grado. but they isolate NO sound. so you can hear the slightest thing, such as mouse clicks. and they will bug everyone around you.

Well, for overall use the Senns will be the best... Ideally I'll keep collecting headphones until I have my ideal collection...

Senn 580/600 for home use/all types of music.
Grado 225's for Rock.
ER4P for portable.

I have a closed headphone but might get another specifically for LANning

LOL, Indeed I do love Headroom... They were the ones that first got me into Audiophile-dom. I suppose I'm an audiophile-wannabe though since I'm not getting headphones for another week... At least not audiophile-grade headphones.

Anyways, I've found Headroom to be very accurate about their product descriptions, anyways. Not many other companies would give their products bad ratings -_-

Senn's are not good gaming headphones generally.

You'll be seeing a gaming-related article coming with explanations regarding what's critical for gaming and why it's often vastly different from what audiophiles are looking for. Senn's in most lan-based games stomp all over the spacial cues resulting in poor performance. Lan games are all about advantage and advantage comes from detail. The more detail the better.

The HD 600's provide GREAT detail but its bass just buries most of the spacial cues and many background details. The 497's are much better in this regard. With games, brighter is often better and dark isn't bad as long as detail isn't the cost.

Frankly, the list of headphones that excel at games, and lan-based combat games in particular is a short list.

I've been involved in the PC audio industry since its inception and this has been a well known issue on the PC soundcard side of thing and with game developers from near the beginning.

Can we please Sennheiser HD 280's back into the discussion?

I have them, play games...and love them. Not a lot of booming bass impact....but if you like a nice tight and detailed sound, and phones that keep out a ton of outside noise, then try out the 280's.

I'll have to try the 280's. I did try the 270's and they were horrible. Flat, lifeless, too much bass push and lots of lost detail. It's hard to see how the step up to the 280's can be that dramatic but it happens.
