Looking for the absolute best headphones possible for 100 or less, a little over is fine, preferably over ear but open to earbuds, I mainly listen to rock and metal if that helps

Hello

For rocks and metal music, I'll go for Grado headphones if sound leak is not an issue otherwise, Sennheiser HD439 are great too

Hope it helps!

What source(s) will the headphones be plugged into?

Grado SR80i are great for metal and rock. But not good for portable on the go use. They are open, so they leak sound a lot and you can hear your environment. Best used for at home.

At home, in a quite room! I can't listen to it in my living room with the TV ON.. I just don't like turning up the volume as it does create some harsh sounding at high volume which is a good thing as it encourages people to listen to music at low volume!

Assuming you will use these headphones for on the move.
JVC-HA-S500 folding headphones, sells for under $60.

I hated these, way to congested sounding with Metal. My pick would also be Grado 80s (Comfort could be an issue) If you need closed, My picks would be Koss DJ100 with M50 pads (The pads are a must) These will have the Speed you will want for Metal. Or The CaL, Not as fast as Grado or the Koss But they work really well with all sorts of music. Best comfort out of the Lot.
