I'm loving the HP-out from my Zune. I've heard the D2 and a few other players are better, but I haven't heard them. I don't think you can go wrong with a Zune.
My discontinued iRiver H140 has the best headphone out of anything (DAP, CD) made recently. Maybe my Sony D-5 CD player and D-25s are better.
The 6G ipod is not bad, but there are some phase delay distortions that affect the sound stage with live music that might be fixed with software - I haven't followed that issue in a long time. I find the phase delay issues (bass arrives after the treble by a miniscule amount) are improved when using a dock line out instead of headphone.
However, most people wouldn't hear this, and I missed it the first time I played with a new ipod - but after my attention was called to it I did a several hour long comparison with a friend and we heard it. The headphone out of the 6G iPod is still very enjoyable, but like the 3G nano and Touch, the line out dock with amp is loads better.
