Looking for some opinions here...

I primarily listen to classical music and was wondering which would be a better fit for this situation, Beyer's DT880 or the Senn. HD600?

My setup: iMac (lossless) -> Beresford TC-7510 -> Millit Hybrid Max -> Senn. HD580

I'm going to go with the HD650's. I'm also a classical listener and I have always been impressed with the midrange voice and upper range with little to no roll off.

Your HD580 is pretty much identical to HD600...

To respond to the query: HD600 is better in my book, better tone.

HD650 is going to be very warm with Millet Hybrid, but the combo is rather nice for many instruments that are mainly in the mids/lows (try a choir or keys).

My Hd580s are a little older and I notice some buzzing/rattling occasionally when a song has some deep bass. Of course, that's at higher volumes as well.

I read that the HD600s improved in this area.

In that scenario just grab an HD600 =). And if you want to get some more treble out of it, you can always just replace the cable with something more high-end (obviously balancing would be better, but I am not going to bank this on assuming that you want to put more money into replacing your already great amp with something about 2x the price and replacing your source too o.O).

If I were to open up the options to include any headphone for $300 or less, what would you recommend?

Doubt anything will do specifically better. Some people might suggest getting K701 - but I won't be the one to do it, not a fan of what they do. HD650 is in the range if you are in for more bass, bigger soundstage, and softer highs (millet hybrid does an excellent job driving them too). On the other hand if you want really accurate tone, HD600 is hard to beat here.

I'm a classical listener and I've been around the block with most of the better phones. For under $300, I'd recommend the HD600 (I prefer to the HD650), D2000, K601 (I prefer to the K701), and probably in that order.

The DT880 is a good headphone alright, but I was eternally distracted by the unrealistic uber detail - orchestra feet shuffling, conductor stomping, coughs, etc., as well as flaws in the instruments that seemed to be magnified.

The buzzing/rattling could be a loose hair up against the driver. Might be worth popping them open before you buy another pair.

As for sound, my brother-in-law has the 580, and I've got the 600 and 650. I haven't listened a lot to the 580, but I don't hear much difference between it and the 600. Both are good for classical, but I give slight preference to the 600. It's a terrific headphone.

He already has HD580

I like classical on my HD580s! I have no reason right now to upgrade my classical cans. I was thinking about purchasing some DT880s but they would be more of a multi-genre can.

The DT880's are much better for classical than any Senns mentioned here, at least for me. But, if you really insist on getting Senns, for this particular purpose I'd go with the HD650's due to larger and less congested soundstage.

I have the 880, had the 580 and have listened to the 601s and own the K501. For classical you should really enjoy the K601. Good sound stage and a great midrange that you need for classical. They have a nice organic sound that works extremely well with this genre.

Try just blowing the back of drivers of the 580s. You dont even have to open them. That should fix the rattling. it seems like when the plastic membrane inside(maybe the dust cover) is crumpled, it causes distortion. blowing from the back makes puts it back in the right shape. it wont hurt to try

This used to be the problem I had with my 580s before

"unrealistic uber detail?". Maybe you like a more mellow fun sound which is fine but detail is never 'unrealistic", only too/more realistic than you prefer.
