You don't need to modify single entry headphones to dual entry. Just post what you want in the For Sale forum and put a link to that thread in your signature, and someone will offer to do it for you.

That is a good idea, but I don't have any single cord entry phones that I "really" want. I've always wanted the Grados, but I just didn't know if some other phone could kick it's can for around the same price.

I also like the look of two cords opposed to just one, I think it looks a lot better. Untill recently, I haven't even considered imbalance issues until I found users mentioning the side with the cord felt "heavier" therefore, creating a slight imbalance. Besides, I honestly don't think I could live with one cord...

Is your favorite number 8 by chance?

Your way of referring to headphones is fairly common, "kick it's can", like it's a competition. The truth, however, is it's a matter of preference. Not everyone prefers the same headphones and uses their headphones in the same way.

Take for example these 3 headphones in this price range and the preferences of 6 Head-Fiers.
1: MS1 > AD700 > M50
2: MS1 > M50 > AD700
3: M50 > AD700 > MS1
4: M50 > MS1 > AD700
5: AD700 > MS1 > M50
6: AD700 > M50 > MS1

Who won this competition? And that's my point. It's not a competition. It's a matter of preference. Whoever is enjoying their headphones is a winner. And not everyone prefers one over another. And not everyone uses their headphones in the same way. Some want headphones that are portable. Some want isolation. Some want sound stage. Some listen to classical. Some listen to rock. And on and on it goes. The question at hand should be which you would prefer. The question should not be which headphones are a winner in a competition conducted by others with preferences and uses that are not all the same, and may not be the same as yours.

I can see what your saying. It's just, I've read tons of things about the Grados being a great "all-rounders" but I know there are many others just the same. That is why it's a pain in the butt to buy new headphones!

Sorry, I just don't want to make mistakes... this is my first real "investment" in good headphones.

It's easy around here to get fooled into believing "X" headphones are great "all arounders". MANY here simply do not understand what I explained in my previous post, and they can be quite fan boyish about their purchases. So I don't blame you for initially wanting a Grado / MS1 (which may or may not be your preference).

One thing that makes the selection process easier is determining the uses for your headphones. You've already identified the source / amp equipment to be used with the headphones, a sansa clip (which amps the headphones).

And so, are you wanting portable headphones? Do you need the headphones to be good at not leaking sound out so to not bother others near by, like in a library or on public transportation? Or, is this not so much of a concern? What kind of music do you listen to? Also, describing the type of sound you want from your headphones may help.

Once again, another wise, well written post.

For sound, I like a dark, sad tone (with plenty of bass to bring out the strings). Which would complement my James Newton Howard soundtracks perfectly. I am quite the bass head. On the opposite side of my soundtracks, I listen to Depeche Mode, and songs with a good beat. (Hence, why I love good bass). I don't really need portability or isolation since I won't let these "new" headphones leave the house. (PortaPros and my canal phones are allowed to leave). I guess I just want something that can provide a nice upgrade from my PortaPros in the sound department.

(I didn't know Sansa Clip is amped)

Thanks again for your help!

You got that reference? Nice.

The portapros are very bassy. I'd say the MS1s have slightly less bass, but are pretty close. The bass is much more controlled though.

All portable devices have some form of amplification, it's just that some (most) are quite weak. Most all players will drive lower impedance headphones (Grados and the sort) but most headphones also sound better with a nice amp. Tis the slow death of ones wallet, that path.

Alright, alright! I can't take it anymore! Limiting myself to only "dual entry" was a bad idea. I'll just take a big gulp... and except the unevenness...

Anyway, I was at Target the other day, and I ran to the headphones. Oh, look, it's some Bose over the ear, ready to be tried on. Curious, I did, just for fun, and I've gotta say, (DON'T KILL ME YET
biggrin.gif
) I really liked the... "squishy feel." That's it. Now. There is a ton of things I could tell you what I didn't like, but that's not what I'm here for.

I'm now on the quest for the ultimate comfort in "around the ear" headphones. Which lead me "instantly" to the HD555 (even though it's single cord
redface.gif
)

Would this be a better choice for soundtracks (and comfort) than Grado?
Also, please reassure me why single entry cord is better than dual entry.

Thanks!

Under $100, Circumaural, bit dark/bassy, and ultimate in comfort? That one has Denon D1001 all over it. As an added bonus, they got dual entry cord.

I think that's your best match. Go for it!

Sweet Thanks! I'll add that to my shortlist along side the HD555.
