I know the Alien DAC is a popular one. Are there any newer updated DIY builds that would cost around the same to build?

There's the Opus DAC and the Buffalo DAC from Twisted Pear Audio, but those are significantly more expensive than the Alien DAC.

The Alien DAC uses SMD chips with really tiny leads. Significantly tighter tolerances than the Mini3 amps I built last month (and amusingly opposite to the Bottlehead amp I've been struggling with over the past few days).
I had to go dig out my dissecting microscope to see what I was doing last night, and probably messed up my first board. You are probably young with steady hands and sharp eyes, but this old man found it pretty challenging to solder up the Alien -- not that it didn't stop me from ordering some more boards and chips to give it another go : )
