A friend is looking for recommendations for a full audio chain (DAC, amplifier, and headphone) for less than $2,000. He like hip hop music and strong bass, and is not sure whether closed or open, though he recognizes that he will use it in noisy situations that would lead to a presence for closed.

What should I suggest?

One idea is the Schiit Lyr 3 with DAC option and the Fostex TH900 semi-closed headphone.

Other ideas? Thanks!

I can confirm that the Fostex TH900 have a strong but also well defined bass, i definitve can recommend them if you (respective your friend) is a bass lover.

Question is which DAC/AMP to pair to stay inside the $2000 limit.
I would suggest to get the Fostex TH900 used in a very good condition then you have more money to spend for the DAC/AMP.

The TH900 are not difficult to drive in terms of impedance (25Ohm), but the max. input is 1800mW (1,8W) which is a lot for headphones.
A possibiliy would be the Fostex HP-A8 even when the max. output is less.
