There are some different devices and methods that allow you to play a proper tube guitar amp through headphones instead of the guitar speaker (the Mesa Boogie cabclone being one example), most of them have some type of speaker emulation. The question is, is it best to go for a pair of monitor type headphones that have a flat response, or a pair of headphones that have a midrange hump like that of a guitar speaker? I'm very curious to hear the different opinions on what people think is the best/correct approach here :)

Guitar player here. I personally prefer a more neutral headphone for my guitar work. I prefer something that colors the sound less rather than more. If you want some suggestions, we would need a budget from you. Then, we can generate a list.

Thanks for getting back :) I'm look at the $200 price range but I'm fine with spending a little more than that. I have a nice single ended tube amp that I use with a mesaboogie cabclone and similar devices (I just use awful old half broken cheap sony headphones at the moment)

You might check out the AKG K553 Pro, NAD HP50, SoundMAGIC HP150, and for a slightly more expensive option, the MEZE 99 Classics. In your price range, there is not a huge number of closed headphone options.
