I showed my friend my setup and now he wants to get into headphones. He is looking for a good set of clkosed cans for around $80. He wants to pair a fiio e11 with them too. I have suggested the Koss DJ100. He is also interested in the Shure srh 440 and the KRK kns 6400. Feel free to express your opinions on these headphones and others.

The DJ100 (or TBSE) are very good headphones, and a very good buy at the $50-$70 they tend to run for (if Tuesday Morning still has the TBSE for $50, that's what I would suggest). The other pair of cans I'd suggest are also from Koss, the R/80, which are also very good performers (and tend to be about $30 on Amazon), but come with less accessories/perks than the TBSE.

A few questions,
Which headphones did your friend try? does he like a certain musical genre?

The shures and the KRK are neutral headphones.

I'm not sure there's many better options under $100 than the DJ100, especially if you can get the TBSE for $50 (just check Tuesday Morning's site, it was still up last I knew (a few days ago)). I can think of a few >$100 models that are perhaps different, but not out and out better, if that makes sense. R/80 is probably a little bassier, but more cramped-in sounding as well.

EDIT
Just checked Amazon - the TBSE are about a dollar less than the DJ100 right now. I'd say saving a dollar to get a hard-case, removable cable, and free album is worth it. :p

Looks like TM still has them too:

I guess the Koss headphones is the most logical way to go.

(i've seen the HA-S500's a couple of times, anything similar to his big brothers? RX700/900?)

Nothing like the RX700,RX900..These sound more like $150-$200 portables. Look for the thread for impressions.

Interesting, i will do some reading.

To the Op, good luck. Keep us posted.
